2025 Admissions Cycle Commences

As the College looks forward to welcoming its new pupils to the school in September, the Admissions Team has now turned its attention to entry for 2025.

Entrance Examinations, for entry to the school in September 2024, will take place on Saturday 9 November 2024 and we are already busy accepting registrations.

For 2025 entry there are a range of scholarships available for particularly able or talented candidates, from Academic, Art and Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre including Dance) to Sport.

In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster. Means-tested Bursaries are also available, along with The Thomas More Scholarship a means-tested scholarship for Catholic children, who attend a Catholic state primary school.

There are plenty of opportunities for prospective pupils and their parents to visit the College before the Entrance Exams take place; including our Open Morning in April, Summer Open Evening in June and Open Afternoon in September, as well as the Year 5 Taster Days in May and June.

Following the Entrance Exams, offer letters will be sent out on Thursday 28 November 2024 and the acceptance deadlines will be Monday 9 December 2024 for Years 8, 9 and 10 and Tuesday 4 March 2025 for Year 7. The acceptance deadline for Year 7 places is, by a nationally agreed code of practice, the same for all independent schools, allowing parents and children time to review all their options, including those from the maintained sector, before making a final decision.

Foundation Launches Strategic Plan

Foundation Principal, Ed Hester, has recently, with colleagues, produced and published a Strategic Plan for the Foundation to underpin the success of all its schools, Princethorpe College, Crescent School and Crackley Hall School and Little Crackers Nursery. This has been one of his key aims over the past year, since changing his role from Head of Princethorpe College to Foundation Principal.

Commenting on the plan he says:

 “I first became a Princethorpe Foundation parent twenty-one years ago, then in 2009 I was delighted to be appointed as Head of the College and Foundation. I know that our schools are incredibly exciting places; we pride ourselves on being warm, kind and caring, as well as being disciplined and aspirational. We cater for a wide range of children from a variety of backgrounds and have an outstanding record of academic success by getting the very best from all our pupils. We have an amazing history, superb facilities and our people are incredibly friendly, bright and energetic. We aim to treat every pupil as an individual, supporting them to grow into mature, resilient, well-rounded and “world ready” young people, with a strong set of moral values to guide them through adult life.

“At the same time, we are a thriving multi-million-pound business with comprehensive plans to ensure we can deliver the very highest quality education to all our pupils. This plan has been shared with trustees, staff, current Foundation parents, OPs and I would now like to share it with prospective families.

Princethorpe Partners With Team Super Sports To Offer Summer Holiday Camps

Princethorpe College is delighted to be partnering with Team Super Sports to offer Holiday Camps to children aged 5 to 16 years for six weeks this July and August. 
 
The initiative is part of the Foundation’s new Commercial Enterprise activity aimed at generating additional sources of income and is in response to feedback and demand from parents. 
 
The Summer Holiday Camps will run from 8.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Friday from 15 July to 23 August and are open to all. They will offer a wide variety of sporting activities, taking advantage of the College’s extensive grounds and sporting facilities. Youngsters aged 7 to 16 can take their pick of rugby, cricket, football, gymnastics, netball, hockey and tennis and create their very own sports camp. In addition to sports, dance and games there will also be optional arts and crafts activities for younger children aged 5 to 7. 
 
Comments, Gemma Cullinane, Princethorpe Commercial Enterprise Manager, “Team Super Sports are an experienced provider of sport and multi-activity holiday camps with a fantastic reputation for top-level coaching for children of all abilities. We are very excited to be joining forces with them for the first of many holiday camps to come. 
 
Dan Super, Founder of Team Super Sports, added, “Princethorpe’s beautiful campus is the perfect setting for a holiday camp. We are expecting it to be a very popular choice for many families in the local area.”

Cambridge Offer For High-Flying Princethorpe Sixth Former

Princethorpe College Upper Sixth Former and Academic Prefect, Joseph Newborough, is thrilled to have received an offer to read Maths and Physics at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge.

Head of Sixth Form, Ben Collie, comments, “Joseph has earned this success. Applying to Oxbridge is a character-testing experience. The process is very competitive, with students facing pre-tests, intensive scrutiny of their academic and personal achievements and rigorous interviews. This is excellent news for him.”

There is good news for the Upper Sixth across the board this year, with the College pleased to support 115 applications through UCAS. Many students applied early and are now reaping the benefits with 32 having already received decisions from all five of their university choices.

Ben Collie, continues, “Applications for medical courses are also progressing well, with interviews completed and two students now waiting on decisions, and the apprenticeship interview season is just about to kick off. Our Upper Sixth have exciting plans for the future, whether that be studying at university, undertaking internships or apprenticeships, working or taking gap years and we are delighted to support them all towards their next steps.”

Medals For André And Grace At The England Indoor Athletics Championships

The College was proud to see two Princethorpe pupils win medals at the England Athletics Age Group Championships in Sheffield at the start of half term. The event took place on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 February with pupils representing their athletics clubs.

Year 11, André Onyekwe, and Year 10, Grace McCollin, both put in personal bests and we applaud their success.

André competed in the U17 Boys High Jump and claimed the Silver medal with an amazing jump of 1.95 metres. He also took Bronze in the U17 Triple Jump with an outstanding hop, step and leap, and personal best, of 13.46 metres.

Grace ran in the U17 Girls Hurdles and sprinted her way to a Bronze medal in a fantastic personal best of 8.63 seconds.

Congratulations also to, Year 11, Olivia Monk who qualified for U17 Girls 60m semi-final with a new personal best of 7.83 seconds and, Year 10, Penelope Jones, who ran a personal best in the U17 Girls 60m Hurdles of 9.37 seconds. It is a fantastic achievement for all these athletes to be competing at this elite level of sport.

Dance Added To Performing Arts Pathways From September 2024

Princethorpe College is introducing a new BTEC Level 2 Performing Arts Dance programme from September 2024, strengthening our performing arts pathways and providing an exciting new creative subject for pupils to study.

Leading the subject will be Rachel Fox, an experienced dance teacher, performer and choreographer, who will be joining us from Birmingham’s renowned specialist Performing Arts Academy BOA. With a first-class degree in Dance, postgraduate teaching qualifications and plenty of experience of teaching BTEC Dance at Level 2 and beyond, Mrs Fox will deliver a highly creative course that enables pupils to refine their performance skills, explore diverse styles and choreograph their own work.

The new BTEC Level 2 qualification is open to all pupils who are currently in Year 9 for a September 2024 start. Find out more on our website here.

The addition of Dance to the curriculum will be reflected in our PE, Games and co-curricular offering of clubs and activities and Mrs Fox will also be available to other pupils, where possible, to assist with dance work related to out of school commitments.

Foundation Publishes Sustainability Plan

The Princethorpe Foundation has just published its Environmental Sustainability Plan. Developed by staff and pupils, it gives a really good insight into what we are doing and what we are aiming to achieve in the future.

You will be aware that the UK government has set ambitious plans to achieve Net Zero. In parallel, the Princethorpe Foundation is taking its own steps on the journey to sustainability. Our ambition is to become carbon neutral, whilst making sure that our environment is safe, fit for-purpose and healthy. Our aim is to remove as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as we emit. Firstly, by reducing our emissions as much as possible and secondly, by offsetting what we do emit.

As part of our journey towards net zero, we have measured the Foundation’s carbon footprint and we will further refine these metrics to measure our progress.

We feel optimistic about joining the fight to build a better future for us all and for the planet, and we are determined to engage and play an active part in the sustainability solution. As part of this we have a central role in educating all our stakeholders about the importance of environmental sustainability. We want our school communities to clearly understand the current global issues and embrace the solutions.

By mobilising our pupils with the requisite knowledge, skills and the desire to effect positive change, we know that the next generation will become the creative problem-solvers of the future.

You will see from the plan that we are working hard to embed environmental sustainability into our thinking and actions in nine key areas and it is particularly heartening to see the high levels of engagement from our pupils. 

Many thanks to Foundation Assistant Head, Alex Darkes, who has led the project for the Foundation and chaired our Environmental Sustainability Board so capably. As Alex retires at the end of April, Foundation Principal, Ed Hester will take over this role and spearhead our future work in the area.

Musical Theatre Group Were Magnificent In Loserville

Our College production of Loserville was magnificent. The Clarkson Theatre was filled full of energetic rock songs as audiences were transported back to America in the 1970s.

Loserville tells the story of unlikely hero Michael Dork and his closest friends, a group of socially awkward boys, struggling through High School and constantly thwarted by popular and privileged school quarterback, Eddie Arch and his cronies. Michael is trying to invent email, Lucas is writing his first Sci-Fi novel (Galaxy Battles; Episode 4) and Marvin and Francis spend all their time building a space ship from a shopping trolley. Then one day, a new girl arrives at the school. Holly is intelligent, funny and harbours a desire to become NASA’s first woman in space. Her sudden arrival throws everyone’s world into turmoil.

Loserville was filled full off brilliant and energetic rock songs by James Bourne of Busted and for five performances we joined our talented Musical Theatre Group on an exciting, if at times bumpy, ride to see our heroes got their 'Ticket Outta Loseville'.

It was spectacular show, full of vibrant energy and enthusiasm and we are all humming along to the songs after what was a most entertaining and enjoyable performance.

Congratulations to everyone involved, on stage and behind the scenes and especially to the Directors, Mr Cowlishaw and Ms Newborough. We just can't wait to find out what their plans are for next year!

Pupils Rise To The Oxford University Computing Challenge

Many congratulations to Jasper Nicholls (Year 9), Daniel Ovens Gibbs (Year 10) and Alex Flegg (Upper Sixth) who were the College’s top performing pupils in their age categories in this year’s Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC). Jasper attained so highly that he was awarded a Merit certificate, placing him in the top 10% of those who took part in the OUCC competition.

The OUCC is an invitational event for those who finished in the top 10% of the UK Bebras Challenge. Both challenges test skills such as logical thinking, pattern recognition and decomposition, as well as computer programming. The OUCC encourages pupils to develop their skills one stage further, consisting of three sections of problems for pupils to solve. It is renowned for being an exceedingly tough challenge and for the first time this year, the competition had a time limit.

15 Princethorpe pupils from Year 9 through to the Sixth Form had qualified for this year’s OUCC competition, a real achievement in its itself. All were awarded certificates.

Head of Computer Science, Ed Musson commented, “Computational thinking is an incredibly useful and powerful skill and all of these pupils have mastered it to a level well beyond their years. It was great to see their abilities being recognised in such a prestigious competition.”

Genevieve Scored Top Marks In Her GCSE Fine Art

Talented Art Scholar, Genevieve Slater-Tucker has been recognised as one of the highest performers in her GCSE Fine Art exam.

Now in the Lower Sixth, Genevieve was delighted to recently discover that she had scored one of the best results in the country in the OCR exam board’s GCSE Art and Design: Fine Art qualification.

Genevieve said: “I was amazed and very proud to hear I had done so well. I have always enjoyed art and worked really hard on the development of my GCSE assessed pieces. The news was unexpected, and I am really thrilled.”

College Head of Art, Paul Hubball, commented: “We are so proud of Genevieve, it was a delight to receive this news. We have had comments from the Moderators before but nothing in writing. It isn’t easy to achieve top marks, but her work is innovative, skilful and complex and worthy of this recognition.”

To mark her success, Mr Hubball presented Genevieve with a special certificate in her Art lesson just before half term.

New Foundation Advertising Campaign Plays On Unique Strengths

The Foundation's new advertising campaign, which launches next week across a variety of media, takes a joined-up approach to communicate the values and ethos of a Princethorpe Foundation education to prospective parents and pupils.

The new Foundation for Life campaign has been developed to highlight that our schools provide more than just an education, preparing pupils with the skills, learning and experiences which will put them on the road to happy and fulfilled lives. The concept underscores the unique strength of the Foundation and that there is a Princethorpe Foundation setting for every stage of a child’s educational journey. It also incorporates a gentle play on words.

Using a distinctive new graphic style emphasising the Tower icon, alongside eye-catching photography, the individual school logos and palette of Foundation brand colours, plus a new gold Foundation colour, the campaign is designed to be both visually impactful and incorporate strong messaging. Text panels emphasise that every individual is valued and that our family of schools aim to nurture, inspire and challenge our pupils to achieve great things.

"We hope the campaign will resonate not only with prospectives in terms of what they are looking for from a school or Foundation for their child, but with the whole Princethorpe community - staff, parents, pupils and Old Princethorpians alike."

Timed to coincide with the launch of Princethorpe’s 2025 admissions cycle, the Marketing Team will be working over the coming weeks to roll the campaign out across digital, outdoor and traditional media for all the Foundation schools.

Award Winning Author Ben Davis Visits Princethorpe College

Princethorpe College welcomed a special guest on Monday 15 January when award-winning author Ben Davis visited the school.

Mr Davis spent the day at Princethorpe hosting three creative writing workshops with Year 8 pupils.

The workshops began with Mr Davis reading extracts from his books including My Dad is Definitely not a Crime Lord and My Brilliant Plan to Fix Everything. Pupils then focused on creating their own short stories using Mr Davis’s methodology for creative writing. It included writing a plan before beginning their story and then focusing on bringing their stories to life by using visually descriptive language. Year 8 engaged enthusiastically with the former stand up comedian’s humour led approach with a number enjoying reading out their written work at the end of the workshop.

After the workshop there was also time for a question-and-answer session and for a book signing.

Nicola Treadwell, College Librarian, said:

“It was a real pleasure to welcome Ben to Princethorpe. His books are appealing and engaging, and their humour ensures that they are always popular with our pupils. The workshop was great fun and Year 8 produced some fabulous creative writing under his guidance. I have come across Ben’s books before and I know that his books are fantastic for all sorts of readers. I was delighted when he agreed to visit the school.”

Huge thanks to Ben Davis for visiting Princethorpe College and inspiring the next generation of successful writers and maybe even a future author or two.

Sophie Was A Superstar At The Regional Futurechef Final

Many congratulations to Year 10 pupil, Sophie Henry, who was commended for her technical skills and ability in a hotly contested Springboard Futurechef Regional Final at Worcestershire College, before half term on Tuesday 6 February.

Six future chefs from across the Midlands competed in the event, preparing two courses in 90 minutes for a budget of just £10. Sophie, who is studying Food and Nutrition at GCSE, had prepared thoroughly putting a lot of time into planning her dishes. The food she produced was of the highest standard and beautifully presented, it included a main course of Chicken Normande and Dauphinoise Potatoes with a dessert course of Chocolate and Raspberry Swiss Roll.

The competition was fierce, with the judges complimenting the contestants for the standard and talent demonstrated.

Princethorpe’s Teacher of Food Technology, Jacqui Scott, said, “I am extremely proud of Sophie, she did brilliantly. Her two-course meal was outstanding, her timing brilliant and she received really positive feedback from the judges.”

A huge well done to Sophie, although she didn’t win this time, we think she truly has the makings of a master chef.

Latest Pinnacle Just Published

The latest issue of the Pinnacle has just been published, showcasing yet more of our pupils' excellent work. The magazine's new editorial team, Julia Lindsay, Jo Evans and Sarah Duran, have given the Pinnacle a bit of a revamp and they hope you like its restyle.

The Pinnacle has always celebrated our pupils at their best and this edition includes plenty more examples of their outstanding efforts. History features, with project work from Year 7, 8 and 9, on the Romans, Richard III and World War Two. As does MFL, with excellent examples of descriptive writing from Year 7 and Year 8 in Spanish and in French.

There is a special Photography Club feature exploring evening photography and a cross foundation spread showing the different initiatives that take place across all the Foundation schools.

A double-sided Minnacle is included too, with equally impressive work by Crackley Hall and Crescent pupils. It's wonderful to celebrate their talents.

2023 Tower Review

The latest edition of the College’s magazine, The Tower Review, was published at the end of the Michaelmas Term.

It tells the story of the school year, term by term, reflecting on the whole host of activities, achievements and successes that pupils from Year 7 through to Upper Sixth took part in. It includes highlights such as Prize Giving and the College production as well as reviews of sporting events and House competitions.

2022/23 was another amazing year filled full of wonderful and memorable moments to reflect on. We hope that our annual souvenir review will be treasured by pupils and parents alike.

Princethorpe College Open Events And Taster Days

Open Morning - Thursday 18 April - 10.30am - 12.30pm

The College's Open Morning will give prospective families looking for a place in September 2025, a chance to visit the school on a normal working day, with Year 8 and 9 pupils acting as tour guides. The Leadership and Admissions Teams will be available to answer any questions visitors might have. Light refreshments will be available.

Open Evening - Wednesday 5 June - 6.30pm - 8.30pm

The College's annual Summer Open Evening will take place on Wednesday 5 June from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. This is an informal opportunity to look around the school, for children to take part in departmental activities and to meet members of staff and pupils. The Headmaster will also address visitors during the evening. Light refreshments will be available.

If you'd love to give hockey a try, why not come along to the Princethorpe College 'Year 4 and 5 Say Hello To Hockey' taster session!

This activity is open to children who do not attend a Foundation Prep School.

A morning of free hockey training on our astroturf, you'll learn new skills, make friends and have fun.  Aimed at girls and boys, the morning will finish with a mini tournament, beginners most welcome!

The 2024 National Schools' And Riding Clubs' Two Day Event

Saturday 25 May – Sunday 26 May 2024

The National Schools’ and Riding Clubs' Two Day Event, sponsored by The Wigley Group, will once again take place on the Princethorpe estate.

It includes classes at 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 100cm for Riding Club and School team and individual competitors. There are also Independent Schools' Association Classes.

Show Jumping and Dressage take place on the Saturday with Roads and Tracks, Steeplechase and Cross Country on the Sunday.

The only event of its kind in the UK, the two-day event regularly attracts up to 300 riders.

Spectators are most welcome to come along and enjoy a wonderful weekend of equestrian competition.

New Pupils Induction Day And Information Fair

Wednesday 26 June 2024 - 9.00am to 4.45pm

(Presentation to Parents and Information Fair from 3.30pm to 4.30pm)

The Induction Day for new pupils starting at the College in September 2024 will take place on Wednesday 26 June 2024. The day will consist of two separate events. The new pupils should arrive at school in their current school uniform for 9.00am, but no earlier than 8.45am and can be dropped off by the Sports Hall where they will be met by the Registrars.

They will spend the day getting to know Mrs Susan Harris, Head of Transition and Induction, their Head of House, meet their new Vertical Tutor Group and their teaching group. Refreshments at break and lunch will be provided.

Parents should return to the Sports Hall at 3.15pm for a prompt start at 3.30pm for their own talks and an Information Fair. Parking will be in the Orchard. There will be an introductory address by the Headmaster, Mr du Toit, and senior staff, after which parents will have the opportunity to visit the Information Fair.

Following the Fair you will be rejoined by your son or daughter for refreshments outside when there will be a further opportunity to chat with Mrs Harris, the Heads of House and other members of staff.  The day will finish around 4.45pm.

Year 7 Activity Day - Monday 2 September 2024 - 9.30am to 4.00pm

The incoming Year 7 children will get a further opportunity to get to know the College and each other a little better on their Activity Day on Monday 2 September, just before term begins on Tuesday 3 September.

 

Summer Art, Photography and Design Show 2024

Thursday 27 June from 6.00pm to 8.30pm and Sunday 30 June from 2.00pm to 4.30pm

A celebration of our pupils GCSE and A-level Art, Photography and Design work will take place on Thursday 27 June from 6.00pm to 8.30pm and on Sunday 30 June from 2.00pm to 4.30pm.

The event, which is part of the Warwickshire Open Studios Summer Art Weeks 2024, includes a range of design technology projects, from resistant materials to textiles, alongside the stunning art and photography work which the College is renowned for.

Princethorpe PTA Summer Fete And Annual Motoring Festival 2024

The College's PTA Summer Fete is held in the Orchard with lots of entertainment for children and adults alike, alongside traditional stalls, refreshments, activities and competitions.

Annual Motoring Festival

One of the highlights of the School Calendar is the Annual Motoring Festival. The Motoring Festival coincides with the Summer Fête and is open to anyone keen to bring any sort of classic, vintage, veteran or interesting vehicle along for the afternoon. There are rally plaques for all vehicles pre-booked by Saturday 1 June 2024 and there are awards for self-judged competitions. Princethorpe College Admissions 2025 And Entrance Examinations Day

Children who want to come to Princethorpe College, the Foundation's senior school, sit an entrance examination, mainly at 11, and at other ages as space allows. A significant number also join us for Sixth Form at age 16.

We welcome children of all faiths and backgrounds, from our Foundation prep schools, Crackley Hall and Crescent School, and many other maintained and independent primary schools from around a radius of about thirty miles.

Competition for places is high, as are standards, but the school also looks for young people who will contribute to the wider life of the school.

Entrance Examinations Day

Entrance Examinations for all age groups (except Sixth Form) will take place on Saturday 9 November 2024 from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

All candidates must be registered before sitting the entrance examinations. Registrations, bursary and scholarship applications must be received by the deadline of Friday 27 September 2024 to allow us to process the registration and contact schools for references.

The scholarships available range from Academic, Art and Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre including Dance) to Sport. In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster.

Additional Needs and Access Arrangements

Children with a special educational need or disability (SEND) will be considered for access arrangements in the Entrance Examinations. Any access arrangements granted will be based on the child’s normal way of working in their current educational environment, for which evidence will be required.

Following receipt of a registration form from any candidate with a learning need, the registration form and all supporting documents (including for example, Personal Learning Plan/Pupil Passport/One Page Profile (PLP), Individualised Education Plan (IEP), Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), Educational Psychologist Report, SEND Specialist Assessment Report, Autism Diagnosis Report, Medical Report or Therapist Report) will be reviewed by a panel of experts from our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team.

The panel will decide upon any appropriate access arrangements for the Entrance Exams based on the evidence provided and the candidate’s normal way of working.

In more complex cases or if the panel has specific questions a meeting with one of our SEND Team will be arranged by the Registrars. Please ensure the Registrars receive your registration in good time, to enable this important review to take place.

Parents will be notified prior to the Entrance Examinations Day of the nature of any access arrangements granted or reasonable adjustments to be made.

On The Day

Candidates are requested to report to the college for 9.30am and entry to the building will be from no earlier than 9.00am. Candidates should wear comfortable casual clothes and should bring two pens, two pencils and an eraser. Candidates for Years 8 to 10 (12+, 13+ and 14+) should additionally bring a ruler.

Candidates sit papers in English and Maths and for those looking at Year 9 and 10 a language paper.  The papers vary in length from 45 minutes to 1 hour. All candidates also sit a 50 minute online assessment which includes Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning, appropriate to their age and year of entry. More information is available under the relevant age group information.

The online assessment is provided by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM). The test is designed to enable all children to demonstrate their academic potential without the need for excessive preparation.

There are no practice papers available for the online assessment. CEM advises parents that children can best prepare for their online assessment by learning to work quietly on their own, completing homework set by their school, and by reading and making sure they understand all the words in any books they read. Children should also, wherever possible, be encouraged to try to solve problems by looking things up for themselves. Children should be familiar with using a keyboard and a mouse including the ability to click, drag and slide with a mouse.

After the Entrance Examinations are marked, the Admissions Panel sits to discuss applications. The Panel will take into consideration the Entrance Examinations results, confidential references from feeder schools and for those with a SEND, feedback from the specialist panel.

Those entering Years 8, 9 and 10 will also have their personal interviews, that take pace during their Taster Day, considered.

Offers Made

Exam results will be posted, first class, on Thursday 28 November 2024. No information will be available beforehand.

For those offered a place confirmation of acceptance with £400 deposit is then required to secure the place by Monday 9 December 2024 (for those entering Years 8, 9 and 10) and Tuesday 4 March 2025 for Year 7. This deposit is refunded after the end of the final term which the pupil spends at Princethorpe.

As per our Terms and Conditions; on receipt of your deposit and the signed Confirmation of Acceptance you enter into a legally binding agreement with the School. You are therefore advised to read the Terms and Conditions before signing the Confirmation of Acceptance.

Once you have confirmed your acceptance of a place and sent your £400 deposit you will receive an acknowledgement and a receipt.  Joining details will then be sent to you during the Easter holidays. These include details of Term Dates, Induction, the School Day, Medical Questionnaire, Uniform, Buses, Catering, Locker Keys, Stationery, Parents’ Evenings and the Parent Teacher Association.

Sixth Form Admissions 2024

We have had a high level of interest in Sixth Form Admissions for September 2024 entry, and the deadline for registrations and scholarship and bursary applications has now passed, if you are interested in a place please call the Admissions Team to discuss potential availability as soon as possible.

Admission to the Sixth Form is based on satisfactory GCSE results, with the addition of an informal interview for external candidates.

The minimum academic requirement for entry to Princethorpe Sixth Form is six GCSEs of grades 9-5, including at least three grade 6s. We also accept equivalent qualifications.

Candidates are normally expected to have at least a level 6 in the subjects to be studied to A-level, however certain subjects have specific minimum entry requirements, as detailed in our Sixth Form Admissions 2024 Information Booklet.

External candidates should get in touch with the Registrar, Mrs Catherine Rogers to arrange an informal interview, with the Head of Sixth Form, Ben Collie or one of his assistants, after which a formal registration along with provisional options for A-level should be made.

Following a satisfactory confidential reference from the student’s current school, the Admission Panel will meet and, if appropriate, a conditional offer will be made subject to actual GCSE grades.

Confirmation of acceptance from a parent with a £300 deposit is then required to secure the place. This deposit is refunded after the end of the final term which the student spends at Princethorpe.

Once actual GCSE grades have been advised to the Registrar by telephone in August, a confirmed offer will be made.

Sixth Form Induction Day will take place on Monday 2 September 2023 from 8.45am to 3.30pm.

Sixth Form Admissions 2025

The Sixth Form at Princethorpe offers great choice, quality teaching in small classes, a vast array of sporting, co-curricular, leadership and service opportunities coupled with excellent pastoral care and guidance, tailored to the needs of today's young adults.

Sixth Formers at Princethorpe are fortunate to have a dedicated Sixth Form Centre, featuring a Dining Room, Coffee Bar, Lecture Theatre, Common Room and a Sixth Form Resource Area and Library for their use.

The Sixth Form admissions process for 2025 will follow the same timings as in previous years. Admissions for Sixth Form are focused in the spring term following GCSE mocks, though we would encourage all prospective Sixth Formers and their parents to attend our Sixth Form Open Evening on Thursday 17 October 2024 from 6.30pm to 9.00pm

This is an ideal opportunity to get a feel for the breadth of Sixth Form life at Princethorpe and to meet and talk with members of staff and current Sixth Formers about A-level and BTEC subject choices.

Following the Sixth Form Open Evening external Year 11 candidates can attend a Sixth Form Taster Day, which are normally offered in December and January. These are informal opportunities for small groups of prospective Sixth Formers to visit the College for a selection of A-level/BTEC subject taster lessons, a Q&A session with current Sixth Formers, lunch, a tour of school and a chance to meet the Head of Sixth Form. In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster.

The number of awards is limited. Scholarships can be to a maximum reduction of 50% of tuition fees, however the majority are between 5% and 20%, and are awarded at point of entry. More than one scholarship can be applied for.

Academic Scholarships

Candidates applying for entry to Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be automatically considered for an academic scholarship when taking the Entrance Examination.

During their time at Princethorpe academic scholars are invited to attend guest lectures and will be offered a variety of opportunities for stretch and challenge, such as undertaking a Project Qualification.

Scholarship Interviews

Prospective Year 7, 8, 9 and 10 pupils who are being considered for an Academic Scholarship will be invited to an interview with the Headmaster, Mr du Toit, following the entrance examinations. The parents/guardians of these candidates will be contacted by telephone from Thursday 14 November 2024. Only those being considered for these awards will be contacted.

The interviews will take place on Saturday 16 November 2024 and during the week commencing Monday 18 November 2024.

Bursaries

Bursaries are available up to 100% of tuition fees and additional educational expenses. Bursary and Thomas More Scholarship applications are made via an online system and supporting evidence will be required.

Applications for bursaries are means-tested and reviewed by external consultants. The deadline for bursary applications is Friday 27 September 2024. Those applications which do not meet the necessary criteria will be notified before the Entrance Examinations.

Sixth Form Scholarships 2025

At Sixth Form level there are a range of scholarships available, from Academic to Art, Drama, Music (including Organ) and Sports Scholarships. All scholarships are open to both our current pupils and those applying from other schools.

Full details and assessment dates will be confirmed in the Sixth Form Admissions 2025 Information Booklet, which is published in September, but in outline, all applications for scholarships must be made by the registration date of Monday 20 January to be considered.

Sixth Form Academic Scholarships

Sixth Form Academic Scholarships are available to external candidates who are expected to achieve 7, 8 or 9 grades at GCSE.

If appropriate candidates will be invited to attend the Sixth Form Acadamic Scholarship Day, which comprises a verbal reasoning examination, an interview with the Headmaster and Head of Sixth Form, taster lessons in two A-level option subjects, lunch and a tour of school.

Sixth Form Sport Scholarships

Candidates should submit a portfolio and detailed account of their reasons for the application supported by references from their coach/activity leaders.

Following a review of the portfolios, as appropriate, candidates will be invited to the Sports Scholarship Assessment Day.

Sixth Form Art Scholarships

Candidates attend an Art Scholarship Assessment Day.

Requirements:

Candidates should have achieved high standards in their GCSE courses (predicted 7, 8 or 9).

Portfolio work would also be expected to contain evidence of creative endeavours outside the confines of school GCSE coursework and be supported by a reference from their Head of Art.

The candidates will be expected to have excellent observational drawing skills and be able to draw from a still life during the interview day.

A WeTransfer of up to 20 images of artwork, in JPEG format, must be included with the application and sent to Princethorpe College by the application deadline.

Candidates will also be expected to bring a portfolio showing work from their previous two years. 3D work should not be brought, photographic evidence of 3D work being sufficient, or as images on the CD.

Art Scholarship Assessment Day:

Candidates will undertake some drawing and design exercises in the art studios and will also be interviewed by the Head of Art with their portfolios of artwork (portfolios should include recent GCSE coursework and evidence of work created outside school)

Successful candidates will be expected to pursue the A-level Art Course.

Sixth Form Music Scholarships

Requirements:

A standard of Grade 7 ABRSM or equivalent in any instrument.

A second instrument, which will probably be at a lower standard than the first. In certain cases it may be possible to begin a second instrument on entry.

The Audition

All candidates must attend a practical examination. At the audition they will be required to:

  • Perform 2 pieces on the instrument of their first choice.
  • Perform 1 piece on the instrument of their second choice.
  • Sing a song of their own choice.
  • Play the panel’s selection of scales and arpeggios from the ABRSM grade that best reflects their current standard and undertake an aural test of the same standard.
  • Participate in a viva voce, where they will be asked about their music-making, hobbies, etc.

Piano accompaniments should be brought to the audition. An accompanist will be provided unless a candidate prefers to be accompanied by an external accompanist they elect to bring with them. Candidates are advised to perform music with which they are comfortable with, rather than playing music which is technically beyond them.

Names and addresses of two referees must be supplied, one of which should be the school music teacher or conductor of a choir or orchestra in which the candidate regularly performs.

Successful candidates will be expected to pursue the A-level Music course.

Sixth Form Drama Scholarships

Requirements:

Candidates should have achieved high standards in their GCSE drama course (predicted 7-9).

A proven track record of dedication to school co-curricular drama productions and a commitment for this to continue in the Sixth Form.

Candidates to have demonstrated leadership qualities in drama related activities, such as directing or mentoring.

The Audition

All candidates must attend an audition. At the audition they will be required to:

  • Perform two 2 minute contrasting monologues, one contemporary and one from pre 1950.
  • Submit a theatre review of a recent production seen by the candidate.
  • Present other supporting evidence for their application.
  • Participate in a viva voce on a play they have studied and a company/theatre practitioner/theatrical style that has particularly inspired them.

Names and addresses of two referees must be supplied, one of which should be the school drama teacher or the leader of a drama company in which the candidate regularly performs.

Successful candidates will be expected to pursue the A-level Theatre Studies course.

How are places offered?

Places are considered based on the results from the entrance examinations, the confidential reference which the College requests from the candidate's current school and any other information which is contained on the registration form. The Admissions Panel looks at each individual application at length before a decision is made regarding the offer of a place. The decision making process runs over three days.

How many places are offered each year?

The cohort each year is different in number and ability, so it depends upon the examination results and the references from the current school. We usually offer slightly more places than we have space for because we recognise that some children may take entrance examinations for more than one school and some live in areas which still operate the 11+ examination.

What is assessed during the entrance examinations?

Pupils for entry into Year 7 will take papers in Mathematics and English (1 hour each) and a 50 minute online assessment (CEM test) which will cover verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. There will also be a 45 minute Free Writing paper which will ask them to write something about themselves.

How can I prepare my child for the exams?

There is no one way to best prepare your child, but we recommend they read widely, look up words they do not understand, use their imagination in their writing, practice their number skills (including times tables) and play word and number games.

As a general rule on the paper tests, advise your son/daughter to answer the easy questions first on the paper and then go back and work on the trickier ones. Practice at timing themselves while they are working is important too, as they often run out of time. None of the questions on any of the papers need to be answered in order. If the child thinks a question is difficult, they should leave it and go onto the next one and then go back and try again if there is enough time. Please encourage your child to just try their best and to show any working out, as some marks might be awarded even if the answer is incorrect.

How are the children put in the new form groups?

At Princethorpe new pupils to the school will join an existing house tutor group comprising pupils from Years 7 to 11. They will stay with this 'family' and form tutor up until Year 11. The Sixth Form have form tutor groups which consist of either Lower or Upper Sixth students.

The Y7 to Y11 house tutor groups have approximately the same number of children from every year group, a mix of girls and boys and ability. 

What sizes are the classes at Princethorpe?

The maximum class size is 24 but are often fewer, at around 20-22 pupils. Design and Technology groups tend to be even smaller, normally around 14-16. Maths and English sets vary according to need – pupils in lower sets will be in slightly smaller groups – usually around 16 or 17.  Students in top sets work very well in slightly larger groups, up to 23 or 24. 

How are the children allocated to a House?

Houses are allocated by the Deputy Head - Pastoral. Where there is an existing connection with the school, pupils usually go into the same house as a sibling or if the parent is an Old Princethorpian. Otherwise the houses are allocated to ensure that the boys and girls are evenly distributed across all four houses.

Will my child get lost when they come to Princethorpe?

Princethorpe has an excellent induction programme that is offered in two separate ways. We have an Induction Day in June for all new pupils when they spend a day in class and get to meet their Head of House, their form tutor and other members of the Princethorpe community. We also have a Year 7 Activity Day which takes place at the end of the summer holidays. This is a fun day with all the new Year 7 children taking part in games, treasure hunts and activities in and out of the classroom. This is another opportunity to find their way around and meet more staff and children in their House just before they begin school, in September.

How do we find out what is happening at school?

The College has a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, The Flagpole, that includes news articles, events, important information and advice. We start sending it to new parents towards the end of the summer term and it is the best place to find out what is happening in school. You will be sent a hard copy calendar each term and you will also find a wealth of information on My School Portal, which you will be introduced to when you receive your Joining Pack.

Do you offer before and after school care?

The school is open from 7.30am each day with breakfast available in the Sixth Form Centre for early birds. Period 1 and registration is at 8.40am. School finishes at 3.45pm with buses departing at 3.55pm. Princethorpe Prep, our supervised Homework Club, is available for pupils until 6.00pm. 

What extra charges, apart from the school fees are there likely to be?

When your child first joins Princethorpe there will be the cost of the school uniform. All text books are loaned to the child and there is no charge unless one is lost or badly damaged. There are school trips, usually for each year group and these are always connected to the curriculum. Children will need to buy food from the Refectory or bring a packed lunch. We use a fingerprint system so money does not need to be brought into school. Princethorpe takes great care to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum and are always good value.

The cost of external public examination fees are also chargeable and are applicable in Year 11 and Upper Sixth and occasionally in other years. Individual subject costs vary and the total cost is also influenced by the number of examinations entered.

 

Current Princethorpe College Bus Service

A comprehensive private bus service brings pupils into the College from a wide area, extending as far afield as Nuneaton and Coventry to the north, Lutterworth and Daventry to the east, Stratford-upon-Avon and Banbury to the south and Solihull to the west.

The two coach operators are Catterall's of Southam and Ridley's of Leamington Spa.

Buses arrive in school for 8.30am in time for the start of the school day.

All buses leave at 3.55pm at the end of the school day. Arrangements need to be made for the collection of those children staying on for extra-curricular activities until 5.15pm or Princethorpe Prep until 6.00pm.

Uniform and Sixth Form Dress Code

Uniform is compulsory for College pupils and helps to create a sense of shared identity, community spirit and a pride in oneself and in the College.

Uniform can be purchased from the School Shop. Please contact the School Shop on 01926 634272 or email uniform@princethorpe.co.uk to make an appointment.

Shop opening hours during term time are as follows:

Mondays and Wednesdays 3.30pm – 4.30pm

During the school holidays the shop is open by appointment only. This is particularly useful for new parents who need to buy the complete range of uniform etc as they will be the sole customer at the time and waiting will be avoided.

Uniform 1

Blazer with College crest, plain white shirt, House tie, black College V-neck jumper, black school trousers (not jeans or canvas material), plain black socks, plain black shoes (not trainer-type shoes).

Uniform 2

Blazer with College crest, plain white revere collar blouse, a green College V-neck jumper, a pleated school skirt, worn to the knee, and/or black school trousers (not jeans or canvas material). Black opaque tights, short plain black ankle socks, plain black low-heeled shoes. In warm weather, transparent tights may be worn.

Additional Information

Underwear, including T-shirts must not be visible under shirts or blouses. Canvas pumps, ankle boots or black trainers are not permitted. Outdoor coats must be plain in colour with no obvious logos, no leather, fur or denim. In severe winter weather pupils are allowed to wear boots or wellingtons to school but must change into shoes once inside the school building. Hats, scarves and gloves, if worn, must be plain or school branded;  

Non-school uniform items are prohibited in school.

Sixth Form Dress Code

Although College uniform is not required we expect Sixth Formers to set an example by smartness of dress and appearance.

A smart business suit with a jacket, which is to be worn at all times. Patterned fabrics are acceptable as long as they are made from a suit fabric i.e. check, tartan etc.

High standards of personal appearance and presentation are expected of pupils at all times.

Sixth Form dress code option 1

Skirt suit with blouse or dress suit - blouse and dress must have a sleeve. Skirt or dress must be worn at the knee.

Sixth Form dress code option 2

Trouser suit with blouse – blouse must have a sleeve.

Trouser suit with shirt and tie – shirt must have a collar

Sixth Form shoes and accessories

  • Jumpers, tank-tops and cardigans are permitted – round or v neck only. No zips or adornments on any knitwear worn. 
  • If a student chooses to wear an item of knitwear, then they must wear this on top of a shirt or blouse not instead of.
  • Any cardigan worn must be worn underneath a suit jacket not instead of a jacket.
  • Formal shoes, no trainers or boots (see images in the Prospectus Information Booklet). Shoes may be a slip-on loafer style, laced or other formal shoe with a sensible heel.

1:1 Digital Device Scheme And BYOD

At Princethorpe College, we aim to provide a caring, stimulating environment in which children’s individual needs can be met and their talents, confidence and self-esteem developed.

Fundamental to this is allowing children to be independent, organised, collaborative and inquisitive learners, who are ready to flourish both at the College and beyond it. Effective use of digital tools is key to this in the modern world, and as a school, we adopt a blended learning approach which allows children to develop their literacy in both the digital and analogue realms.

Key to this is access to the digital tools that allow this blended learning approach to flourish and allow for engaging, interactive and stimulating learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By ensuring that all Princethorpe College pupils have access to an appropriate digital device both in the classroom and beyond the classroom, we can provide a seamless learning experience which promotes and develops the 21st century skills that the children need while also allowing for the best possible learning experience in the here and now.

All pupils at Princethorpe College use a device at school every day. To provide the best access to suitable devices and support we run a Digital Device Scheme, which allows parents to rent or purchase a Lenovo 500W or 13W device through our partner, Easy4U (Class Technology Solutions), including a device assurance package.

We strongly encourage parents of incoming Year 7 pupils to use the Digital Device Scheme to purchase or rent a device, allowing us to provide true 1:1 device use and phase out BYOD over the coming years. This will help ensure that all pupils have a device that both meets all of their classroom needs, is consistent with the devices of their peers and in insured against any damage or theft. The Digital Device Scheme is launched to new Year 7 pupils in the Trinity Term prior to joining the College, and devices are distributed before on the Year 7 Activity Day at the start of September, ready to use from the start of Year 7. Pupils in all year groups can also make use of the Digital Device Scheme.

Where pupils already have a suitable digital device, we can also support the use of these in school.
