Good School Guide Returns To Princethorpe To Update Their Review

Princethorpe has received its second review by the prestigious Good Schools Guide. The Guide, which selects schools to be included on merit alone, is famous for its unbiased and candid reviews of state and private schools and is trusted by families worldwide. Princethorpe is now one of just 1,300 schools currently reviewed by the Guide, out of over 30,000 schools in the UK.

An editor from the Guide visited the College in December 2024, interviewed the Headmaster, Grove du Toit, toured the campus, observed lessons and spoke to pupils, staff and parents.

The nearly 3,000-word review, which appears on the Good Schools Guide’s website and will be included in the next hard copy edition, includes a pen portrait of the Headmaster, plus insights into exam results, teaching and learning, co-curricular life, pastoral care and the College’s ethos and heritage.

Comments Grove du Toit, Headmaster, “After two years in post I was excited to welcome the Good Schools Guide back to Princethorpe to update their review. I am delighted with their findings, especially their recognition of our exceptionally strong pastoral care. Our ‘Spirit of Family’ approach shines through, along with the fact that while we are proud of our Catholic ethos and heritage, we are an inclusive community that welcomes all faiths and none. I am also heartened by the parental feedback on our positive and encouraging approach to teaching and learning, that engages creatively, sets high expectations and gently pushes pupils to achieve.” He continues, “It’s good to have our wonderful rural location and facilities highlighted, including our new Science Centre, and our commitment to developing our campus further, particularly in relation to improving and expanding our sporting facilities – we have very exciting projects planned. All in all, to me it feels a very fair picture of the school and I would encourage current and prospective families to read it.”

The very comprehensive and positive review concludes with a Last Word, which sums up the Guide’s findings:

"Scratch beneath the surface of Princethorpe’s majestic façade and landscaped beauty, and you’ll find pastoral care is its beating heart. Imbuing all disciplines and endeavours, it pumps pupils with confidence as they develop and learn. A picture-perfect pastoral idyll."

Thank you to all the parents, pupils and members of staff who kindly spoke to the Guide's editor about their experience of the school.

VAT on School Fees - The Foundation's Response

Background to the Princethorpe Foundation's response to VAT and plans for 2025-26 fees.

In August 2024 the Princethorpe Foundation announced its response to the Government’s plan to introduce VAT to private school fees from January 2025. Following the Budget announcement in October, the Foundation confirmed that it would be standing by its commitment to minimise the impact on families by reducing its fees from January 2025. The increase passed on to parents was 5%, substantially less than the 20% VAT rate.

Click here to see the current Princethorpe College fees for 2024-2025.

We appreciate that parents will be keen to know the fees for 2025-26; we have already started our financial modelling for the next academic year and will communicate with parents as soon as we are able to.

We are acutely aware that affordability is a key consideration for our parents, and when calculating our fees our aim is to keep any adjustments to a minimum, whilst ensuring we continue to provide the highest standard of education and pastoral care for our pupils.

2026 Admissions Cycle Commences

As the College looks forward to welcoming its new pupils to the school in September, the Admissions Team has now turned its attention to entry for 2026.

As the College looks forward to welcoming its new pupils to the school in September, the Admissions Team has now turned its attention to entry for 2026.

Entrance Examinations, for entry to the school in September 2026, will take place on Saturday 8 November 2025 and we are already busy accepting registrations.

For 2026 entry there are a range of scholarships available for particularly able or talented candidates, from Academic, Art and Performing Arts (Choral, Dance, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre) to Sport.

In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster. Means-tested Bursaries are also available, along with The Thomas More Scholarship a means-tested scholarship for Catholic children, who attend a Catholic state primary school.

There are plenty of opportunities for prospective pupils and their parents to visit the College before the Entrance Exams take place; including our Spring Open Morning in March, Summer Open Evening in June and Open Afternoon in September, as well as the Year 5 Taster Days in May and June.

Comments Melanie Butler, Foundation Director for Marketing, Admissions and Communications, "Parents and pupils will have plenty of time to prepare and opportunities to visit the College in the run up to the registration deadline on Friday 26 September."

Following the Entrance Exams, offer letters will be sent out on Thursday 27 November 2025 and the acceptance deadlines will be Monday 8 December 2025 for Years 8, 9 and 10 and Tuesday 3 March 2026 for Year 7. The acceptance deadline for Year 7 places is, by a nationally agreed code of practice, the same for all independent schools, allowing parents and children time to review all their options, including those from the maintained sector, before making a final decision.

Princethorpe Sixth Former Awarded Prestigious Arkwright Scholarship

At the start of the academic year, Princethorpe Lower Sixth Former, Theo Sparkes, was awarded an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship. The accolade, which comes from The Smallpeice Trust, the UK’s leading STEM Education Charity, is the most prestigious scholarship of its type in the UK. The scholarships support high calibre students while they study for their A-levels, inspiring and encouraging them to pursue careers in the fields of engineering, computing and technical design.

Head of Design and Technology, Paul Scopes, explains, “Arkwright Scholarships are extremely competitive and are the premier award for any student looking to pursue a future in the field of engineering. Pupils are nominated by their teachers, and submit an application focused on their engineering activities, interests and future plans. Applicants then take an examination where their problem-solving skills and engineering potential are put to the test and if successful, they take part in a rigorous interview with a panel of Engineers.

Paul continues, “Theo is currently studying A-level Product Design, Maths, Physics and Computer Science. He should feel rightly proud to have emerged from the process with a Sponsored Arkwright Scholarship with the Parker Foundation based in Birmingham. Theo has always been a driven young man, and the award recognises the design and engineering activities he has participated in, both in and outside of school. The College was delighted to support Theo in his application and very pleased to see his success. He has a bright future ahead of him and it really is a pleasure to teach him.”

Those lucky enough to be awarded a sponsored scholarship, receive a financial award and the support of a mentor who works with them throughout their time in Sixth Form. They are also given the opportunity to take part in courses and events for Arkwright Scholars. They benefit from networking opportunities with like-minded students, gain confidence and knowledge in their subjects and often relevant work experience. They are ideally positioned to pursue Engineering, Computing or Technical Design at university or a higher-level apprenticeship before moving into industry to progress their career.

On receiving the news, Theo said, “These scholarships are one of a kind for people who are interested in engineering. The opportunities it provides will help me develop my skills and interests as I work towards my future career. I felt really pleased and proud when I heard the news that I had received the award, and I am looking forward to working with my mentor over the coming years.”

Head of Sixth Form, Ben Collie, comments, “Arkwright Scholarships are highly sought after as they provide exceptional support. Pupils who successfully obtain an award have access to unparalleled opportunities. Arkwright Engineering Scholars achieve excellent academic success and are known to make enviable career progress. Theo has done incredibly well to receive this accolade, and we congratulate him on his success.”

More information on the Arkwright Scholarship is available at www.arkwright.org.uk

Top Honours For Former Sixth Formers In ISA Art Competition

Three Princethorpe Upper Sixth leavers were awarded top honours in the Regional ISA Art Competition, a testament to the depth and range of talent in Princethorpe's Art and Photography Department.

Gifted artist, Lara Cutri, was awarded first place in the Painting Over 16 class. Lara’s winning painting, titled The Sky, was part of her coursework for her A-level Art examination. It features the rituals associated with the Mexican Day of the Dead, when the gates of heaven open and souls return from the sky to their families on earth. It was a striking portrait and a well-deserved winner. Lara also earned herself a Highly Commended for her compendium of drawings in the Over 16 Sketchbook class. Her sketchbook submission, The Kiss, was of an incredibly high standard and showcased excellent examples of a range of techniques.

Then, talented photographer, Emilia Case took second place in the Photography Over 16 class for her stunning and atmospheric photo (In)Dependence. Her picture was one part of her triptych that was presented at the College’s Art Show in the summer that used high-powered LED lighting to feature the eyes. The photo is an original unedited work, part of her personal investigations into understated emotions. It was first-rate work and worthy of its recognition in the competition.

While exceptional draughtsman, Alexander Matheson, was rewarded with a Highly Commended for his brilliant lifelike work, a stunning, photo-realistic, drawn portrait titled Lara, in the Over 16 Drawing class. Alexander has been a skilful sketcher throughout his years at the College and is deserving of this public recognition.

Paul Hubball, Head of Art and Photography, comments, “Many congratulations to Lara, Emilia and Alexander. Their pieces were exceptional and the product of many hours of work. It is marvellous to see their talent recognised and rewarded in this way. Schools are allowed to submit only one entry in each competition class, so to have had four pieces recognised is a truly excellent result.”

A huge well done to them all!

Nine Medals For Pupils In Their LAMDA Examinations

Princethorpe pupils are celebrating after achieving outstanding results in their London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) examinations. Between them pupils earned nine medals recognising their commitment, diligence and talent in the Performing Arts.

Congratulations go to Ethan Edwards, Alex Mold, Giorgio Kleinmann and Robyn Shaw who all achieved distinction in their Gold Medal Grade 8 Acting examination.  Gold is the highest medal awarded by LAMDA and will have taken years of training to achieve. The four Sixth Formers took their LAMDA Gold medal examinations back in November, at school and received their results at the start of the Lent Term. Achieving their LAMDA Gold Medal examinations means that all four students have now also accrued 30 UCAS points towards their university applications.

Then, well done to Year 11 pupils, Henry Corbin, Josh Gorbutt and Abbas Hazra-Omer who were all awarded distinctions in their Silver Medal Grade 7 Acting and to Lola Foulerton and Charlie Miller who also received distinctions in their Bronze Medal Grade 6 Acting.

The pupils all study for the LAMDA awards in addition to their school studies taking lessons with Princethorpe’s peripatetic teaching team. Lead LAMDA Teacher, Kathy Buckingham-Underhill, commented, "These amazing results are a testament to the hard work and determination of our pupils and I am delighted to see them receiving recognition for their LAMDA studies. Congratulations to them all. Their perseverance and dedication have been amply rewarded. Their LAMDA teachers are incredibly proud of them."

A huge well done to all the pupils on a really impressive achievement.

33 Pupils Qualify For Prestigious Oxford University Computing Challenge

Princethorpe College’s Computer Science pupils, from Year 8 through to the Sixth Form, demonstrated their exceptional skills in the UK Bebras Computing Challenge, held at the beginning of November. The challenge, highly regarded for its emphasis on computational thinking, tasks participants with solving a variety of complex logic problems under timed conditions.

This year, an impressive 187 Princethorpe pupils from across the age groups earned recognition, with 46 achieving a ‘Merit’ and another 46 earning a ‘Distinction.’ A Princethorpe College record of 33 pupils ranked in the top 10% nationally, earning themselves a BEBRAS Gold Award, as well as an invitation to take part in the prestigious Oxford University Computing Challenge (OUCC) in March.

Additional recognition went to Year 9 pupil, Dillon Horan, Year 11 pupil, Daniel Ovens Gibbs, and Lower Sixth student, Emile Gibrat, (pictured) who were each awarded ‘Best in School’ for their respective age groups.

Head of Computer Science, Ed Musson, shared his pride in the pupils’ achievements: “Well done to all who took part! These are superb results. This year, we entered many Year 8 pupils as well as all pupils opting for Computer Science from Year 9 onwards into the Bebras competition. We are delighted with the significant increase in the number of qualifiers for the OUCC. We’re excited to support pupils as they take on this next challenge in March.”

Our congratulations to all the participants and the best of luck to those competing in the OUCC.

Year 8 Pupil Wins Futurechef Regional Final

Many congratulations to Year 8 pupils Emily Divers and Chloe Iley, who competed in a hotly contested Springboard Futurechef Regional Final at the Heart of Worcester College on Wednesday 4 December.

Eight future chefs from across the Midlands had qualified for the event and were tasked with producing one course in 60 minutes for a budget of just £5. Both girls had prepared thoroughly and their finished dishes were of the highest standard and beautifully presented.

The competition was fierce, with the judges complimenting the contestants for the standard and talent demonstrated and we were delighted when Emily was announced as the winner.

A huge well done to Emily and to Chloe, we are very proud of you both.

School Of Rock Raised The Roof

Our College’s Musical Theatre Group production of School of Rock was superb. The Clarkson was filled full of energetic rock songs as audiences enjoyed the hilarious musical.

School of Rock told the story of Dewey Finn, a failed, wannabe rock star who decides to earn a few extra bucks by posing as a substitute teacher at a prestigious prep school. There he turns a class of straight-A students into an amazing rock band and eventually manages to get them to the Battle of the Bands.

School of Rock was filled with rock songs that raised the roof and was testimony to the transforming power of music. It was a brilliant show, full of vibrant energy and enthusiasm and we are all humming along to the songs after what was a most entertaining and enjoyable performance.

Congratulations to everyone involved, on stage and behind the scenes and especially to the Directors, Mr Cowlishaw and Ms Newborough. We are now all looking forward to the Trinity Term and the College’s first ever summer musical for the Lower School!

Foundation News: Full Marks For Crescent School Following Latest ISI Inspection

The Princethorpe Foundation's Prep School, Crescent School, is delighted to have passed an ISI Inspection with the school judged to have fully met the standards in every area.

Crescent School is delighted to have passed an Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) Inspection with the school judged to have fully met the standards in every area following a visit in December 2024.

The report, which has just been published, follows a new framework which examines standards relating to five key areas:

  • leadership and management and governance
  • the quality of education, training and recreation
  • pupils’ physical and mental health and emotional well being
  • pupils’ social and economic education and contribution to society
  • safeguarding

As well as fully meeting all the standards, Crescent School has been judged as having ‘a significant strength’ regarding its ‘inclusive and highly effective focus and provision with regard to PE, sport and healthy living’, which the report details ‘impacts positively on pupils’ performance in class’ and ‘has a very positive impact on pupils’ self-confidence and self-esteem'.  Fewer than ten per cent of schools inspected by the ISI across the UK achieve a coveted ‘significant strength’ recognition.

A team of three inspectors visited the school over three days; they observed lessons and scrutinised pupils’ work. During their rigorous inspection, they spoke with pupils, teachers, senior staff and the Chair of Trustees. Inspectors observed extra-curricular activities, attended assemblies and scrutinised the premises and documentation and records provided by the school. In addition, they reviewed all the responses of parents, pupils and staff to pre-inspection questionnaires.

Other key highlights recognised by the report include:

  • Leaders and staff model the school’s core values of kindness, tolerance and respect so that pupils reflect these in their behaviour.
  • The school provides a broad and engaging curriculum that covers all required areas and a wide range of subjects, including art, design technology, music, drama, Latin and modern foreign languages.
  • Teaching staff create a purposeful and calm learning environment.
  • Well planned teaching utilises a variety of strategies to develop pupils’ ability to think for themselves and enable them to make good progress.
  • Pupils work collaboratively to support each other and treat each other with respect.
  • The recreational activities on offer allow pupils to follow their interests and develop their knowledge, skills and confidence in areas such as sport, music, drama, cookery and chess.

Headmaster, Joe Thackway, comments “We are delighted to have achieved a full clean bill of health from the ISI. The report is a really positive endorsement of everything we do here at Crescent School and reflects a huge team effort. The report shows that we are delivering on our commitment to providing our pupils with an outstanding all-round education, instilling in our children life-long learning skills while fostering the qualities of kindness, tolerance and mutual respect.”

Mr Thackway continues, “It is particularly pleasing to have our PE, Sport and Healthy Living provision recognised as a significant strength of the school, as this undoubtedly has a long-term positive impact on our pupils lives both inside and outside the classroom. My thanks go to the outstanding staff here at Crescent, our wonderful pupils and hugely supportive parent body; all of whom have played a part in this successful inspection.”

Foundation Principal, Ed Hester, added, “As a Foundation we are committed to making our schools environments where every child can thrive, both academically and personally and it is affirming to have this recognised by the ISI. A huge well done to Joe and all the team at Crescent School.”

A copy of the report is available to read here and will shortly be available on the ISI’s website.

The ISI is the Government-approved body responsible for the inspection of independent schools.

Entrance Examinations Day

All the details you need to know about the 2026 entry Entrance Examinations Day

Entrance Examinations Day

Entrance Examinations for Year 7 - 10 places will take place on Saturday 8 November 2025. Timings will be made available closer to the time, but candidates are expected to be here for a full day.

All candidates must be registered before sitting the entrance examinations. Registrations, bursary and scholarship applications must be received by the deadline of Friday 26 September 2025 to allow us time to process the registration and contact current schools for references.

The scholarships available range from Academic, Art and Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre, Dance) to Sport. In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster.

Additional Needs and Access Arrangements

Children with a special educational need or disability (SEND) will be considered for access arrangements in the Entrance Examinations. These are granted based on the child’s normal way of working in their current educational environment, for which evidence will be required.

Please ensure that the Registrars receive your registration and supporting documentation in good time, to enable it to be reviewed by the Learning Support team before the Entrance Examinations. We consider the child's ability to cope within the school environment, whilst accessing not only the curriculum but the co-curricular and social aspects of school life.

In more complex cases, or if the panel has specific questions, a meeting with one of our Learning Support team will be arranged by the Registrars.

Parents will be notified prior to the Entrance Examinations Day of the nature of any access arrangements granted or or if we consider that we are unable to make reasonable adjustments for the candidate based on their SEND needs.

Further information about SEND can be found in our Admissions and Entrance Examinations booklet.

Online Registrations

To register for the Entrance Exams please complete an online registration form and at the same time pay the registration fee. You can also upload completed scholarship applications should you so wish. To start your registration and to view and download all our scholarship forms please click here.

On The Day

We work hard to make the Entrance Examinations day as stress-free as possible for both children and parents. It is set up like a typical school day, albeit on a Saturday. There are four assessment sessions, interspersed with break and lunch, including outside play. Candidates are asked to wear their own casual, comfortable clothes.

Those applying for a Year 7 or 8 place take papers in English comprehension, English free writing, Mathematics, and an online verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessment.

Those applying for a Year 9 place take papers in English comprehension, Mathematics, a modern foreign language (French or Spanish, and an online verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessment.

Those applying for a Year 10 place take papers in English comprehension, Mathematics, a modern foreign language (French or Spanish, and a verbal reasoning paper.

More information is available under the relevant age group information in the Admissions and Entrance Examinations booklet.

The online verbal and non-verbal reasoning assessment is provided by the Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM). The test is designed to enable all children to demonstrate their academic potential without the need for excessive preparation.

For an example of this assessment, please follow the link here. (If you experience difficulties opening this link please try another browser.)

CEM advises parents that children can best prepare for their online assessment by learning to work quietly on their own, completing homework set by their school, and by reading and making sure they understand all the words in any books they read. Children should also, wherever possible, be encouraged to try to solve problems by looking things up for themselves. Children should be familiar with using a keyboard and a mouse including the ability to click, drag and slide with a mouse.

A sample English comprehension paper is available to download from our website here.

Further information about all the Entrance Examinations can be found in the Admissions and Entrance Examination booklet.

A range of resources are also available online from www.bond11plus.co.uk.

Sixth Form Admissions 2026

For those starting to think about Sixth Form for September 2026, find out about the timeline for the process, and a bit more about life in the Sixth Form at Princethorpe College.

The Sixth Form at Princethorpe offers great choice, quality teaching in small classes, a vast array of sporting, co-curricular, leadership and service opportunities coupled with excellent pastoral care and guidance, tailored to the needs of today's young adults.

Sixth Formers at Princethorpe are fortunate to have a dedicated Sixth Form Centre, featuring a Dining Room, Coffee Bar, Lecture Theatre, Common Room and a Sixth Form Resource Area and Library for their use.

The Sixth Form admissions process for 2026 will follow the same timings as in previous years. Admissions for Sixth Form are focused in the spring term following GCSE mocks, though we would encourage all prospective Sixth Formers and their parents to attend our Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 15 October 2025. Bookings will open at the start of the next academic year.

This is an ideal opportunity to get a feel for the breadth of Sixth Form life at Princethorpe and to meet and talk with members of staff and current Sixth Formers about A-level and BTEC subject choices.

Following the Sixth Form Open Evening external Year 11 candidates can attend a Sixth Form Taster Day, which are normally offered in mid December and January. These are informal opportunities for small groups of prospective Sixth Formers to visit the College for a selection of A-level/BTEC subject taster lessons, a Q&A session with current Sixth Formers, lunch, a tour of school and a chance to meet the Head of Sixth Form. Bookings will open in the Michaelmas term.

Admission to the Sixth Form is based on satisfactory GCSE results, with the addition of an informal interview for external candidates. The minimum academic requirements for entry to Princethorpe College Sixth Form is six GCSEs of grades 9-5, including at least three grade 6s or equivalent.

External candidates are required to complete a registration form along with provisional options for A-levels/BTECs. The deadline for Sixth Form registrations and Sixth Form Scholarships will be Monday 19 January 2026.

FAQs

FAQs

Mrs Catherine Rogers, Registrar, and Miss Georgia Newborough, Assistant Registrar, answer some of your frequently asked questions about the admissions process.

Registrar, Mrs Catherine Rogers, and Assistant Registrar, Miss Georgia Newborough, deal with many enquiries from prospective parents. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions about the admissions process, along with their responses.

If you have a query that isn't covered here, please feel free to contact Catherine or Georgia on 01926 634201/297.

What are your plans regarding the VAT on private school fees that is set to be introduced in January 2025?

In August we announced our response to the Government’s plan to introduce VAT to private school fees from January 2025. Following the Budget announcement in October, the Foundation confirmed that it is standing by its commitment to minimise the impact on families by reducing our fees from January 2025. The increase passed on to parents will be 5%, substantially less than the 20% VAT rate.

We are very mindful that parents will be keen to know the fees for 2025-26 as soon as possible; we have already started our financial modelling for the next academic year and will communicate with parents as soon as we are able to. Current fees are available on our website which can be found here.

How are decisions made to offer places?

Places are considered based on the results from the entrance examinations, the confidential reference which the College requests from the candidate's current school and any other information which is contained on the registration form, such extracurricular interests. The Admissions Panel looks at each individual application at length before a decision is made regarding the offer of a place. The decision making process runs over three days.

How many places are offered each year?

The cohort each year is different in number and ability, so it depends upon the examination results and the references from the current school. We usually offer slightly more places than we have space for because we recognise that some children may take entrance examinations for more than one school and some live in areas which still operate the 11+ examination. We are looking for an intake of approximately 120-140 into Year 7.

What is assessed during the entrance examinations?

Pupils currently in Years 6 or 7 will take papers in Mathematics and English Comprehension (1 hour each) and a 50 minute online assessment (CEM test) which will cover verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. There will also be a 45 minute Free Writing paper which will ask them to write something about themselves. Pupils in current Years 8 or 9 will take a modern foreign language paper (French or Spanish) instead of the free writing.

How can I prepare my child for the exams?

There is no one way to best prepare your child, but we recommend they read widely, look up words they do not understand, use their imagination in their writing, practice their number skills (including times tables) and play word and number games.

As a general rule on the paper tests, advise your son/daughter to answer the easy questions first on the paper and then go back and work on the trickier ones. Practice at timing themselves while they are working is important too, as they often run out of time. None of the questions on any of the papers need to be answered in order. If the child thinks a question is difficult, they should leave it and go onto the next one and then go back and try again if there is enough time. Please encourage your child to just try their best and to show any working out, as some marks might be awarded even if the final answer is incorrect.

A copy of a past English paper is available to download from our website here. We do not provide Mathematics practice papers but a list of possible maths topics that might be covered is detailed in our Admissions Booklet and on our website.

There is a sample CEM test available here. Note – for the best experience please use Microsoft Edge or Chrome on a computer or laptop, rather than a tablet or mobile phone. The software works better on these platforms and also the children need to be confident to use a mouse to navigate and select their answers.

A range of resources are available online from www.bond11plus.co.uk

  • Bond How to do 11+ Maths published by Oxford University Press (ISBN 978-1382054171)

They can be ordered online.

How many scholarships are offered each year?

Every year there is a high level of interest in scholarships and we have recently expanded the number of categories available for particularly able or talented candidates.

The scholarships available are Academic, Art, Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre, and Dance) and Sport.

In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster.

The number of scholarships offered each year depends on the funds allocated by the trustees and is limited. Academic scholarships can be to a maximum reduction of 50% of tuition fees, however the majority are between 5% and 20%, and are awarded at point of entry. More than one scholarship can be applied for.

Do you take children with a Special Educational Need or Disability and are they entitled to access arrangements in the exams?

Further information about SEND can be found in the Admissions and Entrance Examination booklet.

How are the children put in the new form groups?

At Princethorpe new pupils to the school will be put onto a teaching group with children across the year group. They will be in the same group for most lessons e.g. Geography, Art, History etc but will have a different group for maths lessons which are streamed by ability and for the practical subjects like DT. Teaching groups are allocated to ensure a balance of ability, age, boys and girls and houses.

What sizes are the classes at Princethorpe?

The maximum class size is 24 but are often fewer, at around 20-22 pupils. Design and Technology groups tend to be even smaller, normally around 14-16. Maths and English sets vary according to need – pupils in lower sets will be in slightly smaller groups – usually around 16 or 17.  Students in top sets work very well in slightly larger groups, up to 23 or 24.

How are the children allocated to a House?

Houses are allocated by the Deputy Head - Pastoral. Where there is an existing connection with the school, pupils usually go into the same house as a sibling or if the parent is an Old Princethorpian. Otherwise the houses are allocated to ensure that the boys and girls are evenly distributed across all four houses.

Will my child get lost when they come to Princethorpe?

Princethorpe has an excellent induction programme that is offered on two separate occasions. We have an Induction Day in June for all new pupils when they spend a day in class and get to meet their Head of House, their form tutor and other members of the Princethorpe community. We also have a Year 7 Orientation Day which takes place at the end of the summer holidays. This is a fun day with all the new Year 7 children taking part in games, treasure hunts and activities in and out of the classroom. This is another opportunity to find their way around and meet more staff and children in their House just before they begin school.

How do we find out what is happening at school?

The College has a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, The Flagpole, that includes news articles, events, important information and advice. We start sending it to new parents towards the end of the summer term and it is the best place to find out what is happening in school. You will be sent a digital copy of the school calendar each term and you will also find a wealth of information on My School Portal, which you will be introduced to when you receive your Joining Pack.

Do you offer before and after school care?

The school is open from 7.30am each day with breakfast available in the Sixth Form Centre for early birds. Period 1 and registration is at 8.40am. School finishes at 3.45pm with co-curricular clubs taking place until 5.30pm. Princethorpe Prep, our supervised Homework Club, is available for pupils until 6.00pm.

What extra charges, apart from the school fees are there likely to be?

When your child first joins Princethorpe there will be the cost of the school uniform. All text books are loaned to the child and there is no charge unless one is lost or badly damaged. There are school trips, usually for each year group and these are always connected to the curriculum. Children will need to buy food from the Refectory or bring a packed lunch. We use a fingerprint system so money does not need to be brought into school. Princethorpe takes great care to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum and are always good value.

The cost of external public examination fees are also chargeable and are applicable in Year 11 and Upper Sixth and occasionally in other years. Individual subject costs vary and the total cost is also influenced by the number of examinations entered.

These are our most frequently asked questions, but we delve deeper into some of these topics on our Admissions Podcast, Pathway to Princethorpe. You can listen and catch up on all our episodes on Spotify, YouTube or Amazon Music. Click here for details.

1:1 Digital Device Scheme And BYOD

Find out more about Princethorpe College's 1:1 Digital Device Scheme.

At Princethorpe College, we aim to provide a caring, stimulating environment in which children’s individual needs can be met and their talents, confidence and self-esteem developed.

Fundamental to this is allowing children to be independent, organised, collaborative and inquisitive learners, who are ready to flourish both at the College and beyond it. Effective use of digital tools is key to this in the modern world, and as a school, we adopt a blended learning approach which allows children to develop their literacy in both the digital and analogue realms.

Key to this is access to the digital tools that allow this blended learning approach to flourish and allow for engaging, interactive and stimulating learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By ensuring that all Princethorpe College pupils have access to an appropriate digital device both in the classroom and beyond the classroom, we can provide a seamless learning experience which promotes and develops the 21st century skills that the children need while also allowing for the best possible learning experience in the here and now.

All pupils at Princethorpe College use a device at school every day. We run the Digital Device Scheme to allow parents to rent or purchase a Lenovo touchscreen device through our partner, Easy4U (Class Technology Solutions), including a device assurance package.

We strongly encourage all incoming pupils to use the Digital Device Scheme, allowing us to provide true 1:1 device use. This helps ensure that all pupils have a device that both meets all of their classroom needs, is consistent with the devices of their peers and insured against any damage or theft. Where pupils already have a suitable device, we can also support the use of these in school.

The Digital Device Scheme is launched to new Year 7 pupils, as well as pupils joining in older year groups, in the Trinity Term prior to starting and devices are distributed at the start of the Michaelmas Term, ready to use from the start of the school year. Pupils in all year groups can also make use of the Digital Device Scheme at any time.
