Grove du Toit Appointed As New Head Of Princethorpe College

Earlier this year, the trustees of the Princethorpe Foundation were delighted to announce the appointment of Grove du Toit as the new Headmaster of Princethorpe College with effect from January 2023.

Mr du Toit went through a rigorous month-long selection process to secure the post against a strong field of candidates.

Mr du Toit is currently Deputy Warden (Senior Deputy Head) at Forest School, a co-educational independent day school for children aged 4 to 18, located on the edge of Epping Forest, a position he has held for five years. He is responsible there for the day to day running of the school, which comprises some 1,500 pupils and more than 300 staff. His extensive remit encompasses oversight of many elements of school life including staffing, recruitment, operations, professional development and staff wellbeing. He also teaches Religious Studies to GCSE and A-level.

Married to Marike, with whom he shares two daughters, aged 13 and 10, Mr du Toit, 42, is a practising Christian. South African by birth, he moved to the UK in 2005 and after a brief period teaching in the maintained sector, he has held a variety of leadership roles in HMC independent schools in and around London.

Mr du Toit has two degrees from the University of Pretoria (a BA in Educational Guidance and Counselling and a BA in Biblical and Religious Studies) and a BEd from the University of South Africa in Educational Management. He also holds an MA in Educational Management from King’s College London and is currently studying for an MBA at Salford Business School.

He has a strong background in the co-curricular life of the school, in particular sport and the performing arts and in his spare time Mr du Toit loves to spend time in the outdoors with his family and dog and his interests include golf and outdoor cooking.

Current Princethorpe Headmaster, Ed Hester, who has been in post since 2009, will take on a new dedicated role as Foundation Principle when Mr du Toit takes up office. This will allow him to focus on the strategic direction of the Foundation as a whole.

Commented, Liz Griffin, Chair of Trustees, “The Foundation Trustees were unanimous in the decision to appoint Grove to be the next Headmaster of Princethorpe College. His passion for education and young people shone through throughout the selection process. He has immense vision and energy combined with a wealth of experience and leaderships skills, but most importantly his personal values marry perfectly with the ethos of the College. We are delighted to welcome him and his family into the Foundation and will introduce him to staff, pupils and parents at the earliest opportunity.

She continued, “Our thanks go to Ed Hester, who has done an outstanding job as Headmaster of Princethorpe College over the last 13 years. Of course, Ed will continue to have a very keen interest in life at Princethorpe and will be on hand to ensure a smooth transition and successful handover to Grove, who will be supported by Princethorpe’s excellent Senior Leadership Team.”

Comments, Grove du Toit, “I am excited and honoured to take on the Headship of Princethorpe College and lead the school into the next stage of its development, building on the excellent work of Ed Hester. I recognise and fully appreciate what a special community Princethorpe is and upholding its ethos and spirit of family will be central to my role. I look forward to immersing myself in school life and building relationships with staff, parents and pupils alike.”

Current Headmaster, Ed Hester, adds, “Grove is a great fit for Princethorpe and brings with him a vast amount of experience and skills. I am delighted to be able to hand over the reins of running the College to him and am really excited at the prospect of working with him over the years ahead.”

Grove du Toit will be attending our admissions events in the run up to the registration deadline in order for prospective pupils and families to meet and talk to him.

ISI Inspection Finds Excellent Pupil Achievement And Personal Development At Princethorpe College

Princethorpe College has received the highest possible ratings across all criteria from the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) following an inspection in April 2022. The report, which has just been published, consists of two elements, a focused compliance inspection, encompassing statutory standards, and an educational quality inspection evaluating the achievements of pupils, including academic performance and their personal development.

Headmaster, Ed Hester, comments “We are delighted with the report, it is a ringing endorsement for everything we do here at Princethorpe and reflects a huge team effort.

He continues, “Pupil achievement and personal development are the two key benchmarks for any successful school and being graded as excellent in both of these broad areas demonstrates the incredible talent, dedication and professionalism of our staff, the outstanding attitude and approach of our pupils and the support of our parents.”

During the inspection, the ISI inspectors observed that, ‘Pupils have very positive attitudes towards their work and are highly focused in lessons’, that they ‘achieve a high level of results, exceeding predictions at every level’ and they ‘benefit significantly from an atmosphere in school which is positive and one where learning and trying one’s best are celebrated’.

Referencing the extensive co-curricular programme, the inspectors commented that ‘pupils embrace wholeheartedly the many opportunities to participate in a myriad of activities and many enjoy substantial success’ and are able to ‘find their own unique passions and relish taking part in them, broadening their perspective on life’.

Pupils’ personal development was also judged as ‘excellent’ with inspectors recognising that ‘pupils have a strong sense of moral responsibility, encouraged by an environment in which there are the key rules of Be Kind and Do Your Best’. The vertical tutoring system was mentioned with older pupils described as ‘excellent ambassadors and role models serving as examples that younger pupils aspire to’. Looking outwards to the wider world the inspectors found that pupils were ‘active in promoting an environmental awareness, reflected in their Planet Princethorpe project’ and that ‘the extensive range of charity work provides a social compass which guides all pupils in their thinking’.

The ISI Inspectors also noted feedback from parents that, ‘commented positively on the strength of the children’s learning and how this reflected the commitment of the teaching and the direction provided by the school’s leaders and trustees’.

Mr Hester concludes, “At Princethorpe our aim is to create a caring and supportive environment where pupils can develop to become well-educated, articulate young people, ready to take their place in society with a true sense of values and purpose. I am delighted that the ISI Inspectors have so comprehensively recognised this in their report.”

The ISI is the Government-approved body responsible for the inspection of independent schools and they consider every aspect of the provision. A copy of the full report is available from the ISI or the Princethorpe College website here.

Out of a cohort of 127 students who completed their A-levels, BTEC and Extended Project Qualification this year, 45% of all A-level grades achieved were A* or A with overall 95% of grades at A* to C. Impressively, 34 high-flyers achieved three or more A*or A grades; special mention to Freya Caine, Sebastian Dibb, Caitlin Mason, Ben Scares and Ciaran Smith who all achieved four A*s.

At GCSE Princethorpe pupils also performed well, from a cohort of 127 pupils over half (54%) of all entries received the coveted 9, 8 or 7 grades and 39 Year 11 pupils achieved eight or more 9, 8 or 7 grades. There were many exceptional personal achievements, with stand-out performances from Oliver Llewellyn, Dina Parmenter, Amy Hogg, Joe Newborough, Harry Kelly and Daisy Southgate, who all achieved an outstanding seven or more grade 9s.

Ed Hester, Headmaster, commented, "We are delighted with the excellent results our Sixth Form students and Year 11 pupils have achieved against a backdrop of unprecedented challenges over the past two years. Their results reflect their hard work and perseverance, all credit goes to our pupils and staff for their commitment, collaboration and hard work."

He continued, "We are proud of their academic achievements, but all these pupils have many other fine qualities: kindness, respect and a strong sense of right and wrong, which will be tremendously important for them as they move on to the next phase of their lives. We congratulate them all on their well-deserved success."

New Science Centre Making Great Progress

Thanks to the hard work of the construction team and plenty of fine weather, work on Princethorpe’s new £8 million Science Centre continues to make great progress. The project is almost halfway through.

The new Science Centre is situated at the top of The Lime Walk. Due to officially open in September 2023, the 10 laboratories will provide state-of-the-art Science facilities for generations of pupils to come.

Work started back in mid-February, and by the end of the Trinity Term the steel framework was in place. On Tuesday 28 June, Headmaster, Ed Hester, visited the Science Centre construction site for his first official tour of the new building. He was accompanied by Trendgrey Construction MD, Nick Henderson, Princethorpe’s Project Manager, Foundation Assistant Head, Alex Darkes, along with, Head of Science, Emma Cooper, and two Sixth Form Science Subject Ambassadors, Hannah Lawrence and Tom Dodsley.

Since then, Trendgrey's dedication to the project has helped the build make significant progress. A lot of the super structure brick work is now complete, particularly at the west end. Inside on the ground floor, the beam and block floor are laid and the partition walls are going up. The drainage works are finished, and the first fix of the electrical and mechanical works is underway. The rafters for the main roof are also being installed. Shortly, the roof trusses will be craned in and the focus then will be to get the building watertight before the weather worsens.

In the first few weeks of the Michaelmas Term, pupils will be asked for their help in collating material for a time capsule that will be buried in the entrance hall of the new building and then we will be looking forward to the topping out ceremony.

As you can see in this latest time lapse clip, it’s a very exciting time for us all here at Princethorpe!

Two Golds At The English Schools Athletics Nationals

At the start of the summer holidays six pupils competed for the Warwickshire Schools Team at the English Schools Athletics Championships. Then, Upper Sixth Former, Cameron McGregor, Lower Sixth Former, Lucy Randall, Year 9, André Onyekwe, Year 9, Olivia Monk, Year 8, Grace McCollin and Year 8, Penelope Jones travelled up to Manchester to compete in the event.

It was such a fantastic achievement for these pupils just to be selected to compete, but to have six athletes reaching the national standard was super exciting for us all here at Princethorpe and we were proud to have had the most pupils ever to be selected from one school for the Warwickshire Team.

The young athletes competed in the 400m, Javelin, High Jump, 100m, Hurdles and Long Jump respectively and we are delighted to share that Cam ran an outstanding race to claim the Gold medal in the 400m, while André soared over the bar to also take Gold in the High Jump. Lucy also threw a personal best in the Javelin.

We are hugely impressed with their commitment and dedication to their sports and are incredibly proud of them all. These young people really are up there with the top athletes in the country for their events and we are really looking forward to seeing them achieve more athletics success this school year.

Belgium Music Tour 2022

At the start of the summer holidays, 32 talented tourists from Princethorpe College’s Music Department took part in a musical adventure when they embarked on a long-awaited performance tour of Belgium.  Pupils from Year 7 all the way up to our Upper Sixth came along for the ride as we finally got off on tour again

Their five-day action-packed itinerary included the chance to perform in three fantastic locations, as well as a visit and audio tour of the Musical Instrument Museum in Brussels. They also visited the Menin Gate in Ypres and were honoured to perform at the internationally renowned Last Post Ceremony. Their trip included a day in Bruges and a super visit to a chocolate factory, as well some time to explore the beautiful city of Brussels and take part in an exciting Virtual Reality adventure.

Princethorpe’s prodigies were magnificent, confidently performing to appreciative and sizeable audiences in Ostend, Ypres and at the Menin Gate. They were all magnificent ambassadors for the College, and had an incredible time into the bargain.

This is the second time that the College has taken both its instrumental and choral groups on tour (previously having had a wonderful trip to Vienna in 2019), and the entire trip was a resounding success.

Motoring Inspiration At The Girls In STEM Workshop

21 girls from Year 8 to Year 10 girls visited the British Motor Museum on Wednesday 29 June to take part in a special Girls in STEM Workshop.

They enjoyed an exclusive keynote presentation and Q&A with Louise Reynolds, Vehicle Line Director at Jaguar Land Rover. Louise spoke about her current role within Jaguar Land Rover, her career, and the challenges that she has faced in a heavily male-dominated workplace.

The pupils then had a Women In Motoring guided tour that included how women were instrumental in the development of the first combustion engine powered car and how early female motorists were encouraged to pack three essential items when driving a motor car: a pet for company, a box of chocolates for sustenance and a loaded revolver to deter any bandits!

They then became 'Engineering Apprentices' removing and replacing a wheel of a remote-control car in a race against time - Georgie's group achieved an impressive time of 10 seconds, beating the current Museum record by a whole 3 seconds! The girls then raced their cars around a track and to their credit none of the wheels fell off. Armourers from MoD Kineton set a challenge to build a crane with pulley system to lift ammunition with which the pupils had varying success at achieving, this in a very short time frame.

Their day culminated with a special presentation from members of the all-female driver line-up of Laser Tools GB4 Racing team. The F1 Pit Stop Challenge brought out the competitive spirit and pupils were split into teams to complete a tyre change relay to simulate F1 pit stops. A brief self-guided tour of the exhibits closed the day before the girls departed with STEM goodie bags in hand.

Head of Physics, Dan Lee, commented, “The girls were an absolute credit to the school - they asked thoughtful questions, engaged in all of the activities and had a really positive experience.”

What an inspirational opportunity – we hope you enjoyed yourselves girls!

Author Tom Palmer Visits Princethorpe

Princethorpe College was delighted to welcome, award-winning author, Tom Palmer, to school on Thursday 12 May. Princethorpe’s Year 7 pupils have been studying Tom’s compelling story, After The War, in their English lessons, and they were thrilled to meet the author himself.

Tom has written over 50 books, despite struggling with reading as a child. He began his career writing about sport and is well known for his Football Academy, Foul Play and The Squad series. He graduated on to war stories starting with Over the Line, a story about a professional footballer’s experience in the First World War and now has six stories loosely based on real life characters and events that engage both as history education as well as on a human level.

During an absorbing afternoon, Tom spoke openly to Year 7 pupils, discussing the inspiration behind his books. He shared his journey to becoming an author and answered a host of questions from our enthusiastic pupils. His down to earth and frank manner, drawing the children in.

Tom was clearly delighted with his appreciative audience and after his talk happily signed copies of his books for the children.

School Librarian and Teacher of Drama, Celia Scott, commented, “We were honoured to have Tom visit Princethorpe, he was just so interesting. Year 7 were mesmerised by his stories and bursting with questions. It was a fascinating afternoon for us all, and we just can’t wait to read Tom’s next book Resist.

Sixth Formers at Princethorpe are fortunate to have a dedicated Sixth Form Centre, featuring a Dining Room, Coffee Bar, Lecture Theatre, Common Room and a Sixth Form Resource Area and Library for their use.

The Sixth Form admissions process for 2023 will follow the same timings as in previous years. Admissions for Sixth Form are focused in the spring term following GCSE mocks, though we would encourage all prospective Sixth Formers and their parents to visit our Sixth Form Open Evening on Wednesday 12 October 2022 from 6.30pm to 9.00pm

This is an ideal opportunity to get a feel for the breadth of Sixth Form life at Princethorpe and to meet and talk with members of staff and current Sixth Formers about A-level and BTEC subject choices.

Following the Sixth Form Open Evening external Year 11 candidates can attend a Sixth Form Taster Day, which are offered in December and January. These are informal opportunities for small groups of prospective Sixth Formers to visit the College for a selection of A-level/BTEC subject taster lessons, a Q&A session with current Sixth Formers, lunch, a tour of school and a meeting with the Head of Sixth Form. If you would be interested in joining us for one of these days, please register your interest here.

Admission to the Sixth Form is based on satisfactory GCSE results, with the addition of an informal interview for external candidates. The minimum academic requirement for entry to Princethorpe Sixth Form is six GCSEs at grades 9-5, including at least three grade 6s or equivalent. Candidates are normally expected to have at least a grade 6 in the subjects to be studied to A-level, however for Mathematics, Modern Foreign Languages, Latin and Chemistry and Physics a grade 8 is recommended, although we will consider pupils who achieved a grade 7 if they have their teacher’s support. A grade 7 is required for Biology.

If you wish to begin Economics or Law in Sixth Form, you will be expected to have achieved at least a grade 6 in both Mathematics and English Language. If you wish to study Computer Science at A-level, you must have taken it at GCSE. If you wish to study Psychology at A-level you will need a minimum of a grade 5 in English and Mathematics, plus a grade 6 is highly recommended in a Science subject (ideally Biology).

External candidates are required to complete a registration form along with provisional options for A-levels/BTECs. The deadline for Sixth Form registrations and Sixth Form Scholarships is Monday 23 January 2023.

Following satisfactory references from the student’s current school, the Admission Panel will meet and, if appropriate, a conditional offer will be made subject to actual GCSE grades. Confirmation of acceptance from a parent with £300 deposit is then required to secure the place. This deposit is refunded after the end of the final term which the pupil spends at Princethorpe.

Sixth Form offers and Scholarship offers, along with confirmation of subject choices will be made the week commencing Monday 20 March 2023, with an acceptance deadline of Wednesday 19 April 2023.

A range of Sixth Form scholarships are available, from Academic to Art, Drama, Music (including Organ) and Sports Scholarships, click here to visit the relevant page on our website.

Once actual GCSE grades have been advised to the Registrar by telephone in August, a confirmed offer will be made.

FAQs

FAQs

Registrar, Mrs Vanessa Rooney, Assistant Registrar, Mrs Catherine Rogers, and Admissions Assistant, Miss Molly Geehan, deal with many enquiries from prospective parents, here are a few of the most frequently asked questions about the admissions process, with their responses.

If you have a query that isn't covered here, please feel free to contact Vanessa, Catherine or Molly on 01926 634201/297/262.

How are places offered?

Places are considered based on the results from the entrance examinations, the reference which the College requests from the candidate's current school and any other information which is contained on the registration form. The Admissions Panel looks at each individual at length before a decision is made regarding the offer of a place. The decision making process runs over three days.

How many places are offered each year?

The cohort each year is different in number and ability so it depends upon the examination results and the references from the current school. We usually offer slightly more places than we have space for because we recognise that some children may take entrance examinations for more than one school and some live in areas which still use the 11+ examination.

What is assessed during the entrance examinations?

Pupils for entry into Year 7 will take papers in Mathematics and English (1 hour each) and a 50 minute online assessment (CEM test) which will cover verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. There will also be a 45 minute Free Writing paper which will ask them to write something about themselves.

How can I prepare my child for the exams?

There is no one way to best prepare your child, but we recommend they read widely, look up words they do not understand, use their imagination in their writing, practice their number skills (including times tables) and play word and number games.

As a general rule on the paper tests, advise your son/daughter to answer the easy questions first on the paper and then go back and work on the trickier ones. Practice at timing themselves while they are working is important too, as they often run out of time. None of the questions on any of the papers need to be answered in order. If the child thinks a question is difficult leave it and go onto the next one and then go back and try again if there is enough time. Please encourage your child to just try their best and to show any working out, as some marks might be awarded even if the answer is incorrect.

'Bond Books' practice assessment papers may be helpful preparation for entry into Year 7.  They can be ordered online or bought from bookshops like W.H. Smith or Waterstones. Look for the 11+ age category. They are available in English, mathematics, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

The online assessment is provided by Durham University’s Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM). The test is designed to enable all children to demonstrate their academic potential without the need for excessive preparation. For more information on the online assessment please visit the CEM website at: https://plus.cem.org/cemselectfam/

Note – for the best experience please use Microsoft Edge or Chrome on a computer or laptop, rather than a tablet or mobile phone. The software works better on these platforms and also the children need to be confident to use a mouse to navigate and select their answers.

A copy of a sample English paper is available to download here.

How many scholarships are offered each year?

The number of scholarships offered each year depends on the funds allocated by the trustees. Academic scholarships awarded vary between 5% and 50%. Art and Music can be from 5% to 25%. All-Rounder scholarships are generally from 5% to 25%. All awards are at the discretion of the Headmaster.

What does an All-Rounder Scholarship mean?

The All-Rounder scholarship is for a child with a strong academic ability who also achieves highly in their activities outside of school. This could be sport, music, drama, art, cubs, brownies etc. If you wish to apply for this scholarship please complete the all-rounder scholarship application form, available here. We will also require a portfolio of evidence of your child’s extra-curricular activities and achievements in order for them to be considered. All families present these to us in different ways but, essentially, we usually receive letters, references from their activity leaders or coaches and any supporting certificates, letters, photographs or other documentation your child feels demonstrates their ability as an excellent 'all-rounder'. Any original documents will be returned to you after offers have been made. For further information, please see our Scholarships and Bursaries page on the Princethorpe College website.  The Admissions Panel frequently sees applications for All-Rounder scholarships which have minimal supporting paperwork. Please make sure that we have sufficient evidence to consider. Potential all-rounder scholars may be invited to an interview with the Head of Co-Curricular in the few days following the entrance examinations.

Do you take children with a Special Educational Need or Disability?

If your child has a special educational need or disability (SEND), which includes social, emotional and/or mental health needs, please indicate this on the registration form. He/she will then be invited in for an assessment with a member of our Learning Support department before the entrance examination takes place. The findings from this assessment then go forward to the Admissions Panel together with the entrance exam results, current school confidential reference and, where appropriate, an up to date specialist report from, for example, an Educational Psychologist or Occupational Therapist.

Are children with a SEND entitled to access arrangements in the exam?

Children with a special educational need or disability may be considered for access arrangements in the entrance examinations. Any access arrangements will usually be based on the child's normal way of working in their current educational environment, for which evidence will be required. We would ask that any Educational Psychologist reports or other supporting information, are forwarded to the Registrars at the earliest opportunity.

All children with a SEND should see a member of our Learning Support department, prior to the entrance exams taking place, who will be happy to discuss their needs.  Please ensure that you register in good time, to enable us to arrange this meeting.

How are the children put in the new form groups?

At Princethorpe new pupils to the school will join an existing house tutor group comprising pupils from Years 7 to 11. They will stay with this 'family' and form tutor up until Year 11. The Sixth Form have form tutor groups which consist of either Lower or Upper Sixth students.

The Y7 to Y11 house tutor groups have approximately the same number of children from every year group, a mix of girls and boys and ability.

What sizes are the classes at Princethorpe?

The maximum class size is 24 but this year's Year 7 classes are at around 20 pupils. Design and Technology groups tend to be smaller, normally around 14. Maths and English sets vary according to need – pupils in lower sets will be in slightly smaller groups – usually around 16 or 17.  Students in top sets work very well in slightly larger groups, up to 23/24.

How are the children allocated to a House?

Houses are allocated by the Deputy Head - Pastoral. Where there is an existing connection with the school pupils usually go into the same house as a sibling or the same house if the parent is an Old Princethorpian. Otherwise the houses are allocated to ensure that the boys and girls are evenly distributed across all four houses.

Will my child get lost when they come to Princethorpe?

Princethorpe has an excellent induction programme that is offered in two separate ways. We have an Induction Day in June for all new pupils when they spend a day in class and get to meet their Head of House, their form tutor and other members of the Princethorpe community. We also have a Year 7 Activity Day which takes place at the end of the summer holidays. This is a fun day with all the new Year 7 children taking part in games, treasure hunts and activities in and out of the classroom. This is another opportunity to find their way around and meet more staff and children in their House just before they begin school, in September.

How do we find out what is happening at school?

The College has a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, The Flagpole, that includes news articles, events, important information and advice. We start sending it to new parents towards the end of the summer term and it is the best place to find out what is happening in school. You will also find a wealth of information on My School Portal, which you will be introduced to when you receive your Joining Pack.

Do you offer before and after school care?

The school is open from 7.30am each day with breakfast available in the Sixth Form Centre for early birds. Period 1 and registration is at 8.40am. School finishes at 3.45pm with buses departing at 3.55pm. Princethorpe Prep is available for pupils until 6.00pm.

What extra charges, apart from the school fees are there likely to be?

When your child first joins Princethorpe there will be the cost of the school uniform and the annual pack of exercise books. All text books are loaned to the child and there is no charge unless one is lost or badly damaged. There are school trips, usually for each year group and these are always connected to the curriculum. Children will need to buy food from the Refectory or bring a packed lunch. We use a fingerprint system so money does not need to be brought into school. Princethorpe takes great care to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum and are always good value.

Current Princethorpe College Bus Service

A comprehensive private bus service brings pupils into the College from a wide area, extending as far afield as Nuneaton and Coventry to the north, Lutterworth and Daventry to the east, Stratford-upon-Avon and Banbury to the south and Solihull to the west.

The two coach operators are Catterall's of Southam and Ridley's of Leamington Spa.

Buses arrive in school for 8.30am in time for the start of the school day.

All buses leave at 3.55pm at the end of the school day. Arrangements need to be made for the collection of those children staying on for extra-curricular activities until 5.15pm or Princethorpe Prep until 6.00pm.

The current bus routes and timetables are available on our dedicated bus service website here. Use the map and postcode search to choose your service and then click on the bus number at the top of the screen for details of the timetable, fares and stops.

A copy of our latest Transport Guide is also available on the bus services website.

Uniform and Sixth Form Dress Code

Uniform is compulsory for College pupils and helps to create a sense of shared identity, community spirit and a pride in oneself and in the College.

Uniform can be purchased from the School Shop.

Normally the School Shop is open for parents on a Wednesday and Friday from 3.30pm to 4.30pm during term time. Additionally during the summer holidays the shop is open on selected dates on an appointment only basis.

Sixth Form Dress Code

Although College uniform is not required we expect Sixth Formers to set an example by smartness of dress and appearance. Smart clothes suitable for a work environment, including a jacket are compulsory.

High standards of personal appearance and presentation are expected of pupils at all times.

1:1 Digital Device Scheme And BYOD

At Princethorpe College, we aim to provide a caring, stimulating environment in which children’s individual needs can be met and their talents, confidence and self-esteem developed.

Fundamental to this is allowing children to be independent, organised, collaborative and inquisitive learners, who are ready to flourish both at the College and beyond it. Effective use of digital tools is key to this in the modern world, and as a school, we adopt a blended learning approach which allows children to develop their literacy in both the digital and analogue realms.

Key to this is access to the digital tools that allow this blended learning approach to flourish and allow for engaging, interactive and stimulating learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By ensuring that all Princethorpe College pupils have access to an appropriate digital device both in the classroom and beyond the classroom, we can provide a seamless learning experience which promotes and develops the 21st century skills that the children need while also allowing for the best possible learning experience in the here and now.

All pupils at Princethorpe College use a device at school every day. In the current Years 7-13 we allow the use of any suitable device through BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) and we also run the Digital Device Scheme. This allows parents to rent or purchase a Surface Go 3 device through our partner, Easy4U (Class Technology Solutions), including a device assurance package.

All incoming cohorts from September 2023 will exclusively use the Digital Device Scheme to rent or purchase a Surface Go 3, allowing us to provide true 1:1 device use and phase out BYOD over the coming years. This will help ensure that all pupils have a device that both meets all of their classroom needs, is consistent with the devices of their peers and in insured against any damage or theft. The Digital Device Scheme is launched to new Year 7 pupils in the Michaelmas term and devices are distributed before Christmas, ready to use from the start of the Lent Term of Year 7. Pupils in all year groups can also make use of the Digital Device Scheme.
