Admissions Team Welcomes A New Assistant Registrar

Pincethorpe has a new member of its Admissions Team. Old Princethorpian Georgia Newborough has returned to the College to take on the role of Assistant Registrar. She will be working alongside Catherine Rogers, our Registrar, assisting families who are interested in entry to the College for September 2025 and beyond.

Georgia knows Princethorpe well, having attended the school as a pupil from 2012 to 2019. She went on to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University of York before spending a year back at Princethorpe working as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Her knowledge and experience of the school, from both sides of the fence, positions her ideally to advise prospective families with children looking to join the school.

Georgia began her Admissions journey in June welcoming and supporting pupils new to Princethorpe when they visited for their Induction Day. Princethorpe College Celebrates Excellent Public Examination Results

Princethorpe College is celebrating another year of excellent exam results.

108 students sat A-level and BTEC examinations and completed the Extended Project Qualification this summer and, continuing the strong performances of previous cohorts, two thirds of all grades awarded were A*- B, with more than a third being A*- A. Impressively, 17 pupils achieved three or more A* or A grades.

At GCSE, Princethorpe pupils also performed well, from a cohort of 150 pupils, 44% of all entries were the coveted 9, 8 or 7 grades, with 32 pupils achieving nine or more 9, 8 or 7 grades.

Grove du Toit, Headmaster, commented, "We are delighted with the excellent results that our Sixth Form students and Year 11 pupils have achieved. They have worked incredibly hard and deserve these results. It was wonderful to see all their happy faces on results day, and we congratulate them all on their well-deserved success. We are thrilled that our pupils have received such good grades but also, more importantly, that the overwhelming majority are moving on to their first choice of next step."

He continued, "We are proud of their academic achievements, but all these pupils have many other fine qualities: kindness, respect and a strong sense of right and wrong, which will be tremendously important for them in the next phase of their lives. We wish them all the very best."

Pupils Rise To The Challenge Of The Duke Of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a big part of life here at Princethorpe College. Recognised as the world’s leading youth achievement award, it provides young people with the opportunity to explore new interests, discover talents, get involved in their local community and make new friends.

The second half of the Trinity Term saw pupils completing their Qualifying Expeditions. Unaccompanied and self-sufficient, they trekked and camped their way across Snowdonia (33 Gold), the Peak District (37 Silver) and the Cotswolds (109 Bronze), working together in teams to achieve their expedition objectives.

Will Bower, Head of Outdoor Education, said, “I am proud that so many of Princethorpe’s pupils embrace the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. They take the opportunity to develop skills and try new experiences, pushing themselves both mentally and physically to live up to the College’s ethos to be the best they can be and all with such commitment and enthusiasm.”

Princethorpe's Pupils Take On The Junior Mathematics Challenge

Back in April, pupils from Princethorpe College took part in the 2024 UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Challenge, a prestigious national problem-solving competition that recognises the best young mathematicians in the country.

Aimed at pupils in Year 7 and Year 8, it is a demanding exercise designed to stretch and test pupils’ mathematical skills. This year, Princethorpe selected 92 able mathematicians to participate in the challenge and the College was delighted with their excellent results.

Congratulations to Year 8, Erik Windham who was awarded a Gold certificate, and took the award for best performing pupil in school, and to Year 7, Evelyn Waterworth, who received a Gold certificate, and took the award for best performing pupil in Year 7. Gold certificates were also awarded to Year 8s Isaac Frith, Bohdan Nicholl and Drew Ovens Gibbs and to Year 7 Ethan Simons. These pupils all performed so well that they also qualified for the follow-on round, the UKMT's Junior Kangaroo Challenge.

In total 12 Gold certificates were awarded, along with 20 Silver and 37 Bronze. It was a fantastic effort from all who toook part.

Princethorpe Brings Home The ISA Trophy And The Wigley Cup

Princethorpe College was once again delighted to host the National Schools and Riding Clubs Two-Day Event. Run in conjunction with Stoneleigh Riding Club, nearly 200 competitors took part in the two-day competition, over the weekend 25 to 26 May, one of only a few ‘long format’ events open to schools and riding clubs in the UK. It included dressage and show-jumping on the Saturday and roads and tracks, steeplechase and cross-country on the Sunday.

This was the ninth year the College has hosted the event on the Princethorpe estate, and the course looked magnificent against the backdrop of the Princethorpe Tower. It included classes at 70cm, 80cm, 90cm and 100cm. Returning once again and causing much excitement was the challenging permanent cross-country water jump generously built by one of the event’s main sponsors, The Wigley Group.

Princethorpe College had riders competing at all heights and representation from Foundation Prep School, Crackley Hall, too. The College's teams had plenty of success, in both the Schools and ISA events. Against a very competitive field, Princethorpe’s Team Cloisters were worthy winners of the ISA Trophy and the Wigley Cup.

Alex Darkes, Princethorpe’s equestrian event organiser, said, “The College was delighted to welcome school and riding club competitors to the Princethorpe estate. It was great to see such a strong presence of school participants, many of whom had travelled long distances to take part in the competition. It was also wonderful to welcome OP competitors too. Our thanks go to members of Stoneleigh Riding Club, the event's key sponsors The Wigley Group, our Grounds and Estates Teams and all the volunteers, without whom we would have been unable to stage such a busy event.”

Princethorpe's Musical Prodigies Tour The Rheinland

38 pupils from the College’s Choir, String Orchestra and Concert Band, from Years 7 to the Sixth Form, travelled to the Rhineland in Germany in June, where they took part in an enjoyable and successful five-day music tour.

Their action-packed adventure included the opportunity to perform in stunning locations, as well as the chance to visit the Seigfrieds Musikkabinett (mechanical instrument museum), explore the picturesque towns of Boppard, Cologne and Koblenz, take a boat cruise on the river Moselle and spend time at the Phantasialand Theme Park.

Princethorpe’s talented prodigies confidently performed to appreciative and sizeable audiences in Rűdesheim and Kohlbachhaus. They were fabulous ambassadors for the College, and were applaided by all.

This is the third time that the College has taken its instrumental and choral groups on tour (previously having had wonderful trips to Vienna in 2019 and Belgium in 2022) and the entire trip was once again a resounding success.

Plenty Of Inspiration At The British Motor Museum Girls In STEM Workshop

A group of girls from Year 9 and Year 10 and our Lower Sixth STEAM Ambassador, Jemima Teeton, visited the British Motor Museum in June to take part in a special Girls in STEM workshop.

They enjoyed an exclusive keynote presentation and Q&A with Louise Reynolds, Director of Procurement at Aston Martin, followed by an interactive tour of the collection. Then they raced remote-controlled Jaguar D-types around a special track and tried out some hands-on science activities with the STEM Ambassadors from MoD Kineton.

The day culminated with the opportunity to meet Eliza Seville, Formula Woman 2022 winner, and hear from, Senior Programme Manager, Kerrie Earl, on what it takes to be a successful woman in motorsport.

Head of Physics, Dan Lee, commented, “The girls were an absolute credit to the school - they asked thoughtful questions, engaged in all of the activities and had a really positive experience.”

It was an inspirational opportunity enjoyed by them all.

Children should also, wherever possible, be encouraged to try to solve problems by looking things up for themselves. Children should be familiar with using a keyboard and a mouse including the ability to click, drag and slide with a mouse.

Students are normally expected to have at least a grade 6 in the subject to be studied to A-level, although specific requirements apply for some subjects please click here to see full requirements.

Following satisfactory references from the student’s current school, the Admission Panel will meet and, if appropriate, a conditional offer will be made subject to actual GCSE grades. Confirmation of acceptance from a parent with £400 deposit is then required to secure the place. This deposit is refunded after the end of the final term which the pupil spends at Princethorpe.

Sixth Form offers and Scholarship offers, along with confirmation of subject choices will be sent out week commencing Monday 31 March with an acceptance deadline of Wednesday 30 April 2025. This is also the deadline for Princethorpe Year 11 pupils to notify us by if they do not plan to return for Sixth Form to meet our Terms and Conditions.

A range of Sixth Form scholarships are available, from Academic to Art, Drama, Music (including Organ) and Sports Scholarships, click here to visit the relevant page on our website.

Once actual GCSE grades have been advised to the Registrar by telephone in August, a confirmed offer will be made.

FAQs

FAQs

Registrar, Mrs Catherine Rogers, and Assistant Registrar, Miss Georgia Newborough, deal with many enquiries from prospective parents. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions about the admissions process, along with their responses.

If you have a query that isn't covered here, please feel free to contact Catherine or Georgia on 01926 634201/297.

What are your plans regarding the VAT on private school fees that is set to be introduced in January 2025?

We have just announced our response to the Government’s plan to introduce VAT to private school fees from January 2025. If implemented, the College will be reducing its fees so that the gross increase passed on to parents will be 5%, substantially less than the 20% VAT rate, which we hope will come as good news. For more on the fees and our strategy, please visit the VAT on School Fees page on our website, which can be found here.

How are places offered?

Places are considered based on the results from the entrance examinations, the confidential reference which the College requests from the candidate's current school and any other information which is contained on the registration form, such extracurricular interests. The Admissions Panel looks at each individual application at length before a decision is made regarding the offer of a place. The decision making process runs over three days.

How many places are offered each year?

The cohort each year is different in number and ability, so it depends upon the examination results and the references from the current school. We usually offer slightly more places than we have space for because we recognise that some children may take entrance examinations for more than one school and some live in areas which still operate the 11+ examination. We are looking for an intake of approximately 120-140 into Year 7.

What is assessed during the entrance examinations?

Pupils for entry into Year 7 will take papers in Mathematics and English (1 hour each) and a 50 minute online assessment (CEM test) which will cover verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. There will also be a 45 minute Free Writing paper which will ask them to write something about themselves.

How can I prepare my child for the exams?

There is no one way to best prepare your child, but we recommend they read widely, look up words they do not understand, use their imagination in their writing, practice their number skills (including times tables) and play word and number games.

As a general rule on the paper tests, advise your son/daughter to answer the easy questions first on the paper and then go back and work on the trickier ones. Practice at timing themselves while they are working is important too, as they often run out of time. None of the questions on any of the papers need to be answered in order. If the child thinks a question is difficult, they should leave it and go onto the next one and then go back and try again if there is enough time. Please encourage your child to just try their best and to show any working out, as some marks might be awarded even if the final answer is incorrect.

A copy of a past English paper is included in the prospectus pack and is available to download from our website here. We do not provide Mathematics practice papers but a list of possible maths topics that might be covered is detailed in our Admissions Booklet and on our website.

There is a sample CEM test available here. Note – for the best experience please use Microsoft Edge or Chrome on a computer or laptop, rather than a tablet or mobile phone. The software works better on these platforms and also the children need to be confident to use a mouse to navigate and select their answers.

A range of resources are available online from www.bond11plus.co.uk

  • Bond How to do 11+ Maths published by Oxford University Press (ISBN 978-1382054171)

They can be ordered online.

How many scholarships are offered each year?

Every year there is a high level of interest in scholarships and we have recently expanded the number of categories available for particularly able or talented candidates.

The scholarships available are Academic, Art, Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre including Dance) and Sport.

In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster.

The number of scholarships offered each year depends on the funds allocated by the trustees and is limited. Academic scholarships can be to a maximum reduction of 50% of tuition fees, however the majority are between 5% and 20%, and are awarded at point of entry. More than one scholarship can be applied for.

Do you take children with a Special Educational Need or Disability and are they entitled to access arrangements in the exams?

If your child has a special educational need or disability (SEND)*, please indicate this on the registration form and provide supporting documentation, see below.

*SEND may refer to cognition and learning, e.g. dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, SEMH – social, emotional and mental health, e.g. ADHD, anxiety, communication and interaction, e.g. Autism Spectrum, speech, language communication needs or physical, medical, sensory impairment or mobility.

Children with a special educational need or disability will be considered for access arrangements in the entrance examinations. Any access arrangements granted will be based on the child's normal way of working in their current educational environment, for which evidence will be required.

Following receipt of a registration form from any candidate with a learning need, the registration form and all supporting documents (including, for example, Personal Learning Plan/Pupil Passport/One Page Profile (PLP), Individualised Education Plan (IEP), Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), Educational Psychologist Report, SEND Specialist Assessment Report, Autism Diagnosis Report, Medical Report or Therapist Report) will be reviewed by a panel of experts from our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team.

The Team will decide upon any appropriate access arrangements for the Entrance Exams based on the evidence provided and the candidate’s normal way of working.

In more complex cases or if the Team has specific questions, a meeting with one of our SEND Team will be arranged by the Registrars. Please ensure the Registrars receive your registration in good time, to enable this important review to take place.

Parents will be notified prior to the Entrance Examinations day of the nature of any access arrangements granted or reasonable adjustments to be made.

How are the children put in the new form groups?

At Princethorpe new pupils to the school will be put onto a teaching group with children across the year group. They will be in the same group for most lessons e.g. Geography, Art, History etc but will have a different group for maths lessons which are streamed by ability and for the practical subjects like DT. Teaching groups are allocated to ensure a balance of ability, age, boys and girls and houses.

What sizes are the classes at Princethorpe?

The maximum class size is 24 but are often fewer, at around 20-22 pupils. Design and Technology groups tend to be even smaller, normally around 14-16. Maths and English sets vary according to need – pupils in lower sets will be in slightly smaller groups – usually around 16 or 17.  Students in top sets work very well in slightly larger groups, up to 23 or 24.

How are the children allocated to a House?

Houses are allocated by the Deputy Head - Pastoral. Where there is an existing connection with the school, pupils usually go into the same house as a sibling or if the parent is an Old Princethorpian. Otherwise the houses are allocated to ensure that the boys and girls are evenly distributed across all four houses.

Will my child get lost when they come to Princethorpe?

Princethorpe has an excellent induction programme that is offered on two separate occasions. We have an Induction Day in June for all new pupils when they spend a day in class and get to meet their Head of House, their form tutor and other members of the Princethorpe community. We also have a Year 7 Preparation Day which takes place at the end of the summer holidays. This is a fun day with all the new Year 7 children taking part in games, treasure hunts and activities in and out of the classroom. This is another opportunity to find their way around and meet more staff and children in their House just before they begin school, in September.

How do we find out what is happening at school?

The College has a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, The Flagpole, that includes news articles, events, important information and advice. We start sending it to new parents towards the end of the summer term and it is the best place to find out what is happening in school. You will be sent a digital copy of the school calendar each term and you will also find a wealth of information on My School Portal, which you will be introduced to when you receive your Joining Pack.

Do you offer before and after school care?

The school is open from 7.30am each day with breakfast available in the Sixth Form Centre for early birds. Period 1 and registration is at 8.40am. School finishes at 3.45pm with buses departing at 3.55pm. Princethorpe Prep, our supervised Homework Club, is available for pupils until 6.00pm.

What extra charges, apart from the school fees are there likely to be?

When your child first joins Princethorpe there will be the cost of the school uniform. All text books are loaned to the child and there is no charge unless one is lost or badly damaged. There are school trips, usually for each year group and these are always connected to the curriculum. Children will need to buy food from the Refectory or bring a packed lunch. We use a fingerprint system so money does not need to be brought into school. Princethorpe takes great care to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum and are always good value.

The cost of external public examination fees are also chargeable and are applicable in Year 11 and Upper Sixth and occasionally in other years. Individual subject costs vary and the total cost is also influenced by the number of examinations entered.

These are our most frequently asked questions, but we delve deeper into some of these topics on our Admissions Podcast, Pathway to Princethorpe. You can listen and catch up on all our episodes on Spotify, YouTube or Amazon Music. Click here for details.

1:1 Digital Device Scheme And BYOD

At Princethorpe College, we aim to provide a caring, stimulating environment in which children’s individual needs can be met and their talents, confidence and self-esteem developed.

Fundamental to this is allowing children to be independent, organised, collaborative and inquisitive learners, who are ready to flourish both at the College and beyond it. Effective use of digital tools is key to this in the modern world, and as a school, we adopt a blended learning approach which allows children to develop their literacy in both the digital and analogue realms.

Key to this is access to the digital tools that allow this blended learning approach to flourish and allow for engaging, interactive and stimulating learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By ensuring that all Princethorpe College pupils have access to an appropriate digital device both in the classroom and beyond the classroom, we can provide a seamless learning experience which promotes and develops the 21st century skills that the children need while also allowing for the best possible learning experience in the here and now.

All pupils at Princethorpe College use a device at school every day. To provide the best access to suitable devices and support we run a Digital Device Scheme, which allows parents to rent or purchase a Lenovo 500W or 13W device through our partner, Easy4U (Class Technology Solutions), including a device assurance package.

We encourage parents of incoming Year 7 pupils to use the Digital Device Scheme to purchase or rent a device, allowing us to provide fully supported 1:1 device use . This helps ensure that all pupils have a device that both meets all of their classroom needs, is consistent with the devices of their peers and in insured against any damage or theft. The Digital Device Scheme is launched to new Year 7 pupils in the Trinity Term prior to joining the College, and devices are distributed at the start of term in early September, ready to use from the start of Year 7. Pupils in all year groups can also make use of the Digital Device Scheme.

Where pupils already have a suitable digital device, we can also support the use of these in school.
