Princethorpe College Celebrates Excellent Public Examination Results

Princethorpe College is celebrating another year of excellent exam results.

108 students sat A-level and BTEC examinations and completed the Extended Project Qualification this summer and, continuing the strong performances of previous cohorts, two thirds of all grades awarded were A*- B, with more than a third being A*- A. Impressively, 16 students achieved three or more A* or A grades and the overwhelming majority, 95%, moved on to their first choice of next step.

At GCSE, Princethorpe had its best ever results. From a cohort of 113 pupils, more than half of all entries were the coveted 9, 8 or 7 grades, with a quarter of pupils achieving nine or more 9, 8 or 7 grades. This year’s results also show superb progress, with pupils in Year 11 achieving on average almost a grade higher than would be expected from their individual starting points.

Grove du Toit, Headmaster, commented, "We are delighted with the excellent results that our Sixth Form students and Year 11 pupils have achieved. They have worked incredibly hard and deserve these results. It was wonderful to see all their happy faces on their results days, and we congratulate them all on their well-deserved success. We are thrilled that our pupils have received such good grades but also, more importantly, that the overwhelming majority are moving on to their first choice of next step."

He continued, "We are proud of their academic achievements, but all these pupils have many other fine qualities: kindness, respect and a strong sense of right and wrong, which will be tremendously important for them in the next phase of their lives. We wish them all the very best."

College Shortlisted For Independent School Of The Year Student Careers Award

Princethorpe College is delighted to have been shortlisted for the ‘Independent School of the Year for Student Careers’ category in the 2025 Independent Schools of the Year Awards.

The Awards Scheme celebrates the independent education sector, showcasing excellence in student experience and recognising the varied and imaginative way in which independent schools prepare young people for their future lives. Now in its eighth year, the College is pleased to have been selected ahead of a record number of entries from independent schools across the UK.

Grove du Toit, Headmaster, comments, “We are thrilled to have been shortlisted for this award. It is a really wonderful accolade and is testament to the incredible work our Careers team and College staff do here at Princethorpe and to our Curriculum for Life which fosters personal development alongside academic excellence.”

The award recognises the College’s forward-looking Careers Programme that starts from Year 7 and concentrates on identifying aptitudes, developing competencies, delivering experiences and providing tailored guidance and support to pupils as they move through school and out into the world. The programme includes a biennial flagship Career Insights event, that this year welcomed nearly sixty speakers, the majority Old Princethorpians, to present on a wide variety of careers and professions. It provided a host of advice to listen to, lessons to be learnt, questions to be asked and connections to be made and a truly inspirational keynote speech from guest speaker and Old Princethorpian, Tunde Olanrewaju, Senior Partner with global management consultancy, McKinsey & Co.

The award finalists are due to be announced in September with the winners revealed in October.

New Muddy Stilettos Review Of The College

In May, Princethorpe College received its first review from popular online platform, Muddy Stilettos.

An editor from Muddy had visited the College in April to meet with Grove du Toit, the Headmaster, and was toured around school by two of our Lower Sixth Formers.

The very positive review describes the College as 'An idyllically-placed selective independent co-ed Catholic day school for 11-18s in rural Warwickshire with a family feel, excellent pastoral care and excellent academics.'

College Athletes Awarded Three Silver Medals At The English Schools Nationals

College athletes Grace McCollin, Olivia Monk, Marisa Lumani and Dami Ajagunna competed for Warwickshire at the English Schools Athletics Track & Field Championships at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham at the start of the summer holidays.

It was a fantastic achievement for these pupils to have been selected for this prestigious national event and to have four pupils reaching the standard was super exciting for us all here at Princethorpe College.

Our young athletes competed in the Hurdles, Mixed Relay, 100m, High Jump and Shot. Grace ran an outstanding race to take the Silver medal in 11.18s in the Inter Girls 80m Hurdles and claimed another Silver as part of the Warwickshire team in the Mixed 4x100m Relay. Marisa won a Silver medal with an outstanding 12.09m throw in the Junior Girls Shot. Dami jumped an incredible 1.59m to finish 6th in the Junior Girls High Jump while Olivia ran 12.57s in the Senior Girls 100m heats.

We are hugely impressed by these pupils commitment and dedication to their sports and are incredibly proud of them all.

Summer Sports Tour To South Africa Was Spectacular

At the start of the summer holidays the College enjoyed a successful 16-day sports tour to South Africa. Taking a squad of 95 pupils and 12 staff, playing four sports, Rugby, Football, Netball and Hockey, the tour travelled to Cape Town, then on to Johannesburg, Pretoria and Pilanesberg for a fortnight full of keenly contested matches and spectacular sight-seeing.

The Rugby, Football, Netball and boys’ and girls’ Hockey teams participated in six days of good spirited and competitive training and matches against school and club teams. Our South African hosts were so hospitable, and the training and matches were great experiences for all, with valuable lessons learnt both on and off the field.

Away from the sports field, the tour offered participants the chance to broaden their horizons with sightseeing and educational experiences that included the history of South Africa with tours of Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. Pupils also took part in an eye-opening tour of Cape Town’s oldest back township and got up close and personal with the wildlife in game drives at Pilanesberg Game Reserve. The tour party all enjoyed the spectacular scenery of Table Mountain in Cape Town and the Cape Peninsular including the charming costal town of Hout Bay.

Lee Cassell, Foundation Director of Sport, and leader of the tour, said, “South Africa is a truly stunning country, passionate and fiercely competitive in their sport. We had another excellent trip and played some inspiring matches and I know that our Princethorpe pupils will have returned home with plenty of wonderful memories.”

Our thanks go to all the staff involved in putting together and running the South Africa Sports Tour. We look forward to the experiences translating into positive results on the pitches over the coming season.

Newsies Jr Was Enjoyed By All

Our College’s Lower School Musical Theatre Group production of Newsies Jr  was just superb. The Clarkson Theatre was filled full of rousing songs as audiences enjoyed the sensational show.

Over three nights, the cast of 40 talented pupils from Years 7 to 9, told the story of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a band of young newsies in New York, who rallies young workers from across the city to strike against unfair conditions and fight for what's right.

It was a brilliant first musical for our lower school pupils to perform, full of vibrant energy, passion and enthusiasm and we are all still humming along to the songs.

Congratulations to everyone involved, on stage and behind the scenes and especially to the Directors, Mr Cowlishaw and Ms Newborough.

Pupils Take On The Duke Of Edinburgh's Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a big part of life here at Princethorpe College. Recognised as the world’s leading youth achievement award, it provides young people with the opportunity to explore new interests, discover talents, get involved in their local community and make new friends.

The second half of the Trinity Term saw pupils completing their Qualifying Expeditions. Unaccompanied and self-sufficient, they trekked and camped their way across Snowdonia (30 Gold), the Peak District (49 Silver) and the Cotswolds (124 Bronze), working together in teams to achieve their expedition objectives.

Tamsin Frost, DofE Manager, said, “I am always impressed that so many of Princethorpe’s pupils embrace the challenge of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. They take the opportunity to develop skills and try new experiences, pushing themselves both mentally and physically to live up to the College’s ethos and be the best they can be and all with such commitment and enthusiasm.”

Year 8 Went Out Into The Wilderness

Year 8 pupils enjoyed a hugely successful three-day bushcraft trip where they learned survival skills while enjoying the great outdoors. Their immersive experience took place in Boughton Woods in Northamptonshire in May with pupils completing a range of activities including shelter building, camouflage, campfire making, wilderness first aid and other bushcraft skills. The outdoor trip pushed the pupils out of their comfort zones boosting their self-confidence and resilience. Year 8 enjoyed wilderness walks and campfire camaraderie, developed their social skills as well as their team working, communication, problem solving and leadership skills, made new friendships and generally all had a wonderful time.

Princethorpe's Pupils Take On The Junior Mathematics Challenge

Back in April, pupils from Princethorpe College took part in the 2025 UK Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Junior Challenge, a prestigious national problem-solving competition that recognises the best young mathematicians in the country.

Aimed at pupils in Year 7 and Year 8, it is a demanding exercise designed to stretch and test pupils’ mathematical skills. This year, Princethorpe selected 87 able mathematicians to participate in the challenge and the College was delighted with their excellent results.

Congratulations to Year 8, Tegan, who was awarded a Gold certificate, and took the award for best performing pupil in school, and to Arthur, Eloise, Darcey, Maxr, Monty, Austin, Jessica and Darcey who also all received Gold certificates. Tegan, Ethan and Artur did so well that they also qualified for the follow-on round, the UKMT's Junior Kangaroo Challenge.

Princethorpe College Admissions 2026 and Entrance Examinations Day

Information on the admissions process for 2026 and the format of Entrance Examinations Day.

Children who want to come to Princethorpe College, the Foundation's senior school, sit an entrance examination, mainly at 11, and at other ages as space allows. A significant number also join us for Sixth Form at age 16.

We welcome children of all faiths and backgrounds, from our Foundation prep schools, Crackley Hall and Crescent School, and many other state and independent primary schools from around a radius of about thirty miles.

Competition for places is high, as are standards, but the school also looks for young people who will contribute to the wider life of the school.

Our Registrar, Mrs Catherine Rogers and Assistant Registrar, Miss Georgia Newborough, will be pleased to talk you through the admissions process; contact them at admissions@princethorpe.co.uk or call 01926 634201/297.

Click here to download our 2026 Admissions and Entrance Examinations Booklet (Years 7 to 10).

Click here to download our full Prospectus, including the Information Booklet.

Entrance Examinations Day

Entrance Examinations for all age groups (except Sixth Form) will take place on Saturday 8 November 2025 from 9.30am to 4.00pm.

All candidates must be registered before sitting the entrance examinations. Registrations, bursary and scholarship applications must be received by the deadline of Friday 26 September 2025 to allow us time to process the registration and contact schools for references.

The scholarships available range from Art and Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre including Dance) to Sport. All children who sit the entrance exams are automatically considered for an academic scholarship, and no separate application form is required. In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which cannot be applied for and would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster.

Additional Needs and Access Arrangements

Children with a special educational need or disability (SEND) will be considered for access arrangements in the Entrance Examinations. Any access arrangements granted will be based on the child’s normal way of working in their current educational environment, for which evidence will be required.

Following receipt of a registration form from any candidate with a learning need, the registration form and all supporting documents (including for example, Personal Learning Plan/Pupil Passport/One Page Profile (PLP), Individualised Education Plan (IEP), Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP), Educational Psychologist Report, SEND Specialist Assessment Report, Autism Diagnosis Report, Medical Report or Therapist Report) will be reviewed by a panel of experts from our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team.

The College needs to have full information on a candidate and their SEND needs before any decision can be made as to our capacity to provide the necessary support in school, based on their ability to cope within the school environment, whilst accessing not only the curriculum but the co-curricular and social aspects of school life. Our decisions also look at the child's likely education journey with us and are taken alongside consideration of other children with SEND needs that we are supporting at the time. Whilst we do successfully support children with a range of SEND needs, we are not a specialist school, and there are occasions where, despite adjustments, we are not able to meet a prospective pupil's needs.

The panel will decide upon any appropriate access arrangements for the Entrance Exams based on the evidence provided and the candidate’s normal way of working.

In more complex cases or if the panel has specific questions a meeting with one of our SEND Team will be arranged by the Registrars. Please ensure the Registrars receive your registration in good time, to enable this important review to take place.

Parents will be notified prior to the Entrance Examinations Day of the nature of any access arrangements granted or reasonable adjustments to be made.

Online Registrations

Our registration form can be found online, and you are able to pay the £90 non-refundable registration fee at the same time as completing the form. You can also upload completed scholarship forms at the same time should you wish to do so. To start your registration and to view and download all our scholarship forms please click here.

On The Day

Candidates are requested to report to the college for 9.30am and entry to the building will be from no earlier than 9.00am. Candidates should wear comfortable casual clothes and should bring a pen, two pencils and an eraser. Year 7 candidates must not bring a ruler. Years 8-10 candidates should also bring a ruler. Candidates for Years 9 and 10 (13+ and 14+) should bring a calculator and protractor.

Candidates sit papers in English and Maths and for those looking at Year 9 and 10 a language paper.  The papers vary in length from 45 minutes to 1 hour. All candidates for Year 7-9 entry also sit a 50 minute online assessment which includes Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning and Numerical Reasoning, appropriate to their age and year of entry. Year 10 candidates will take a paper reasoning assessment. More information is available under the relevant age group information.

The online assessment is provided by Durham University’s Centre for Evaluation and Monitoring (CEM). The test is designed to enable all children to demonstrate their academic potential without the need for excessive preparation.

For more information on the online assessment please visit the CEM website at:

https://plus.cem.org/cemselectfam/

(If you experience difficulties opening this link please try Internet Explorer.)

There are no practice papers available for the online assessment. CEM advises parents that children can best prepare for their online assessment by learning to work quietly on their own, completing homework set by their school, and by reading and making sure they understand all the words in any books they read. Children should also, wherever possible, be encouraged to try to solve problems by looking things up for themselves. Children should be familiar with using a keyboard and a mouse including the ability to click, drag and slide with a mouse.

A copy of a past English paper is included in the prospectus pack. We do not provide Mathematics practice papers.

A range of resources are available online from www.bond11plus.co.uk.

The following may also prove helpful:

• Bond How to do 11+ Verbal Reasoning published by Oxford University Press (ISBN 978-1382054218)

They can be ordered online.

For more information visit the Entrance Examinations Day section on our website.

FAQs

FAQs

Mrs Catherine Rogers, Registrar, and Miss Georgia Newborough, Assistant Registrar, answer some of your frequently asked questions about the admissions process.

Registrar, Mrs Catherine Rogers, and Assistant Registrar, Miss Georgia Newborough, deal with many enquiries from prospective parents. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions about the admissions process, along with their responses.

If you have a query that isn't covered here, please feel free to contact Catherine or Georgia on 01926 634201/297.

How did the Foundation respond to the introduction of VAT to private school fees in January 2025?

In January 2025 the Foundation reduced its fees so that the increase passed on to parents was 5%, substantially less than the 20% VAT rate. We continue to stand by our commitment to minimise the impact on families, keeping fees as affordable as possible, whilst continuing to provide the highest standard of education and pastoral care for our pupils.

Current fees are available on our website which can be found here.

How are decisions made to offer places?

Places are considered based on the results from the entrance examinations, the confidential reference which the College requests from the candidate's current school and any other information which is contained on the registration form, such extracurricular interests. The Admissions Panel looks at each individual application at length before a decision is made regarding the offer of a place. The decision making process runs over three days.

How many places are offered each year?

The cohort each year is different in number and ability, so it depends upon the examination results and the references from the current school. We usually offer slightly more places than we have space for because we recognise that some children may take entrance examinations for more than one school and some live in areas which still operate the 11+ examination. We are looking for an intake of approximately 130-140 into Year 7.

What is assessed during the entrance examinations?

Pupils currently in Years 6 or 7 will take papers in Mathematics and English Comprehension (1 hour each) and a 50 minute online assessment (CEM test) which will cover verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning and numerical reasoning. There will also be a 45 minute Free Writing paper which will ask them to write something about themselves. Pupils in current Years 8 or 9 will take a modern foreign language paper (French or Spanish) instead of the free writing. Pupils currently in Year 9 also take a paper Verbal Reasoning exam, rather than the online CEM test.

How can I prepare my child for the exams?

There is no one way to best prepare your child, but we recommend they read widely, look up words they do not understand, use their imagination in their writing, practice their number skills (including times tables) and play word and number games.

As a general rule on the paper tests, advise your son/daughter to answer the easy questions first on the paper and then go back and work on the trickier ones. Practice at timing themselves while they are working is important too, as they often run out of time. None of the questions on any of the papers need to be answered in order. If the child thinks a question is difficult, they should leave it and go onto the next one and then go back and try again if there is enough time. Please encourage your child to just try their best and to show any working out, as some marks might be awarded even if the final answer is incorrect.

A copy of a past English paper is available to download from our website here. We do not provide Mathematics practice papers but a list of possible maths topics that might be covered is detailed in our Admissions Booklet and on our website.

There is a sample CEM test available here. Note – for the best experience please use Microsoft Edge or Chrome on a computer or laptop, rather than a tablet or mobile phone. The software works better on these platforms and also the children need to be confident to use a mouse to navigate and select their answers.

A range of resources are available online from www.bond11plus.co.uk

The following may also prove helpful:

  • Bond How to do 11+ Verbal Reasoning published by Oxford University Press (ISBN 978-1382054218)
  • Bond How to do 11+ Non-Verbal Reasoning published by Oxford University Press (ISBN 978-1382054195)
  • Bond How to do 11+ Maths published by Oxford University Press (ISBN 978-1382054171)

They can be ordered online.

How many scholarships are offered each year?

Every year there is a high level of interest in scholarships and we have recently expanded the number of categories available for particularly able or talented candidates.

The scholarships available are Academic, Art, Performing Arts (Choral, Drama, Music, Musical Theatre, and Dance) and Sport.

In addition, exceptional candidates who are both academically able and gifted and talented across a number of areas may be considered for an All-Rounder Scholarship, which would be awarded at the discretion of the Headmaster.

The number of scholarships offered each year depends on the funds allocated by the trustees and is limited. Academic scholarships can be to a maximum reduction of 50% of tuition fees, however subject specific scholarships are a reduction of between 5% and 20% of tuition fees, and are awarded at the point of entry. More than one scholarship can be applied for.

Do you take children with a Special Educational Need or Disability and are they entitled to access arrangements in the exams?

Full information about SEND can be found in the Admissions and Entrance Examination booklet.

How are the children put in the new form groups?

At Princethorpe new pupils to the school will be put onto a teaching group with children across the year group. They will be in the same group for most lessons e.g. Geography, Art, History etc but will have a different group for maths lessons which are streamed by ability and for the practical subjects like DT. Teaching groups are allocated to ensure a balance of ability, age, boys and girls, and houses.

What sizes are the classes at Princethorpe?

The maximum class size is 24 but are often fewer, at around 20-22 pupils. Design and Technology groups tend to be even smaller, normally around 14-16. Maths and English sets vary according to need – pupils in lower sets will be in slightly smaller groups – usually around 16 or 17.  Students in top sets work very well in slightly larger groups, up to 23 or 24.

How are the children allocated to a House?

Houses are allocated by the Pastoral team. Where there is an existing connection with the school, pupils usually go into the same house as a sibling or if the parent is an Old Princethorpian. Otherwise the houses are allocated to ensure that the boys and girls are evenly distributed across all four houses.

Will my child get lost when they come to Princethorpe?

Princethorpe has an excellent induction programme that is offered on two separate occasions. We have an Induction Day in June for all new pupils when they spend a day in class and get to meet their Head of House, their form tutor and other members of the Princethorpe community. We also have a Year 7 Orientation Day which takes place at the end of the summer holidays. This is a fun day with all the new Year 7 children taking part in games, treasure hunts and activities in and out of the classroom. This is another opportunity to find their way around and meet more staff and children in their House just before they begin school.

How do we find out what is happening at school?

The College has a bi-weekly electronic newsletter, The Flagpole, that includes news articles, events, important information and advice. We start sending it to new parents towards the end of the summer term and it is the best place to find out what is happening in school. You will be sent a digital copy of the school calendar each term and you will also find a wealth of information on My School Portal, which you will be introduced to when you receive your Joining Pack.

Do you offer before and after school care?

The school is open from 7.30am each day with breakfast available in the Sixth Form Centre for early birds. Period 1 and registration is at 8.40am. School finishes at 3.45pm with co-curricular clubs taking place until 5.30pm. Princethorpe Prep, our supervised Homework Club, is available for pupils until 6.00pm.

What extra charges, apart from the school fees are there likely to be?

When your child first joins Princethorpe there will be the cost of the school uniform. All text books are loaned to the child and there is no charge unless one is lost or badly damaged. There are school trips, usually for each year group and these are always connected to the curriculum. Children will need to buy food from the Refectory or bring a packed lunch. We use a fingerprint system so money does not need to be brought into school. Princethorpe takes great care to ensure that costs are kept to a minimum and are always good value.

The cost of external public examination fees are also chargeable and are applicable in Year 11 and Upper Sixth and occasionally in other years. Individual subject costs vary and the total cost is also influenced by the number of examinations entered.

These are our most frequently asked questions, but we delve deeper into some of these topics on our Admissions Podcast, Pathway to Princethorpe. You can listen and catch up on all our episodes on Spotify, YouTube or Amazon Music. Click here for details.

Princethorpe College Bus Service 2025/26

Information about the current Princethorpe College bus service.

A comprehensive private bus service brings pupils into the College from a wide area, extending as far afield as Nuneaton and Coventry to the north, Lutterworth and Daventry to the east, Stratford-upon-Avon and Banbury to the south and Solihull to the west.

Buses arrive in school for 8.30am in time for the start of the school day.

The majority of our buses leave at 3.55pm, just after the end of the school day.

For those children staying for co-curricular activities, this year we are introducing an express late bus service, with three routes, Leamington/Stratford, Coventry/North Rugby and South Rugby/Southam stopping at a limited number of hub stops. These will operate Monday to Thursday throughout the school year and leave at 5.45pm to coincide with the end of co-curricular activities or Prep. We hope this improvement to our transport provision will be well received and popular, however we will carefully monitor the uptake of the services. Information about the routes are available in the Transport Guide below. Alternatively, children can be collected from site.

The current bus routes, prices, and timetables are available on our dedicated bus service website here. You can also download the latest Transport Guide at the link here. Use the map and postcode search to choose your service and then click on the bus number at the top of the screen for details of the timetable and stops.

1:1 Digital Device Scheme And BYOD

Find out more about Princethorpe College's 1:1 Digital Device Scheme.

At Princethorpe College, we aim to provide a caring, stimulating environment in which children’s individual needs can be met and their talents, confidence and self-esteem developed.

Fundamental to this is allowing children to be independent, organised, collaborative and inquisitive learners, who are ready to flourish both at the College and beyond it. Effective use of digital tools is key to this in the modern world, and as a school, we adopt a blended learning approach which allows children to develop their literacy in both the digital and analogue realms.

The College works with parents to provide access to the digital devices and tools that allow this blended learning approach to flourish, creating engaging, interactive and stimulating learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. By ensuring that all Princethorpe College pupils have access to an appropriate digital device both in the classroom and beyond the classroom, we can provide a seamless learning experience which promotes and develops the 21st century skills that the children need while also allowing for the best possible learning experience in the here and now.

All pupils at Princethorpe College use a device at school every day. We run the Digital Device Scheme to allow parents to rent or purchase a Lenovo touchscreen device through our partner, Easy4U (Class Technology Solutions), including a device assurance package.

We encourage all incoming pupils to use the Digital Device Scheme, allowing us to provide true 1:1 device use. This helps ensure that all pupils have a device that both meets all of their classroom needs, is consistent with the devices of their peers and insured against any damage or theft. Where pupils already have a suitable device, we can also support the use of these in school. Alongside this, we can support suitable devices that are purchased privately.

The Digital Device Scheme is launched to new Year 7 pupils, as well as pupils joining in older year groups, in the Trinity Term prior to starting and devices are distributed at the start of the Michaelmas Term, ready to use from the start of the school year. Pupils in all year groups can also make use of the Digital Device Scheme at any time.
